Watch VideosSome of the favorite aspects I love about the dental profession is one, it's a jack-of-all-trades and you know a lot of times you you're just functioning as the clinician you're actually doing the dental work but many times you see yourself and you're you think you for example you might be a psychologist you're you get close to your patients they come and share things with you obviously you're dealing with patients with dental anxiety and things like this and helping them calm down and work through their fears or just through life sometimes it's been amazing other times as you're working you're using engineering or plumbing principles so on and so forth so just the the vastness of what you do as a dentist is is so fun the the variability and the flexibility of the schedule is just been a huge benefit being able to work and really determine that schedule especially if you own your own practice or are in a partnership something like this that makes it so much flexible so to have more family time which is something I've really enjoyed over the years
One of my favorite aspects is getting people out of pain. They are so thankful after you, whether it is extract that tooth or get rid of that nerve and they feel better. Another favorite aspect is I love extracting teeth. I love being able to get a bad tooth out and obviously again for the same thing, helping the patient feel better. It's also kind of like a puzzle. It's very much like that where it makes you feel very good inside and it helps you feel accomplished when you can get something out that was hard but you end up doing a good job at it.
One of my favorite aspects of dentistry is the relationships that you develop with people over time with the staff and with patients You'll have people that you see their whole family. You'll see their kids their grandkids. You'll be involved in their lives you get to hear their stories and They'll come in and they'll be in pain or suffering you get to alleviate that pain and suffering and improve the aesthetics of their smile And make them happier You get to basically change their lives and get paid for it Which is the best part by far for me and it's really a blessing to feel like you make a difference in the world So I'm very grateful for that Another thing that I really am grateful for is just the autonomy. I can Have control over my work life I can work more or less if I want to I can do what procedures I enjoy and not do ones I don't enjoy I can choose what to refer out what not to refer out And so those are some wonderful things because there are some hard things to some really hard things with dentistry So it's nice to have that
One of my favorite aspects about my dental career is that I've had the opportunity to do a lot of different things than what I ever thought I would do in becoming a dentist. So I've worked in public health with Indian Health Service and with community health centers most of my career, but going through that it's exposed me to a lot of different things. I've had opportunities to project manage and build multiple 50,000 square foot comprehensive medical centers. Currently I oversee about 20 plus medical providers and 10 dentists and really I think along with that I've just learned a lot about business, a lot about people, and really had a lot of opportunity for growth inside of my career that is very much different than just being a dentist.
I think my favorite aspect of being a dentist is being able to interact with a variety of people and help them. Help them get out of pain or help them have a beautiful smile. I enjoy the technical skill with your hands. It's an art that you are creating something aesthetic, something that's comfortable. It's a challenge. I enjoy general dentistry, especially for the variety of it. I get to do some implants and get to see some kids, get to extract a variety of teeth that have gone bad, and get to save many teeth with root canals. That variety and being able to be the provider for a family and see families year after year can be very satisfying. Being able to provide for my own family is satisfying and helpful also.
For myself, the most appealing aspect of going into dentistry was that it gave me a lot of freedom latitude that maybe other careers wouldn't offer. For example, I was able to choose where I was going to work. No business or company was going to tell me I had to move. It also gave me financial freedom to be able to do and afford things with family and time freedom. I could choose what days to take off, what days to work, what hours to work. All of those things were a great benefit to me during my career in dentistry.
As a dentist, you can really, really help people and you can really change people's lives. And I would say that those are my favorite aspects. Situations where patients come in with pain, just being able to relieve their pain, that may have been something that's been keeping a patient awake for days or unable to eat, and being able to get a patient out of pain or to fix a broken tooth or change a patient's smile. Those are all things that people are really, really thankful for, and you can make an immediate, really noticeable impact on people's lives.
