Why people quit - Dentist Video Transcripts

Dentistry is challenging. Many people don't like the dentist. They don't like the pain involved or the cost, and burnout is a real thing. Dealing with cranky people, dealing with the challenges of business ownership can be and the student debt is a significant concern. Working hard to maintain a balance of these things and having colleagues you can talk to, often a group setting, a group practice where you have colleagues you can talk to and that you can support each other, can be a great strength and help. It just gets hard some days. We all just need a break from it sometimes. Bending over backwards, their back or neck can be sore or damaged and so that is another reason.

Well, I think the dentistry is definitely a challenging, difficult career. You're working on people with their health. There's somebody connected to those teeth and sometimes it can be stressful situations in performing the procedures or individuals who are in pain, having difficulty functioning, or individuals who just maybe get upset or have difficulty with finances, etc. But I don't personally know anybody who's quit dentistry. I think that I've seen a number of people who have modified their career by choosing to either become an associate or work for somebody else instead of owning their own practice or using dentistry in a different manner in the career, either going into sales with one of the supply houses or consulting or different things like that. I think dentistry provides a lot of opportunities that are very worthwhile.

I've known several people who have gone through dental school and practiced for a short while and then dropped out, and I've known some who hit the wall at about 10-15 years of practice and quit. I think the common thread there is that they found that dentistry is much more demanding physically and mentally than they had anticipated, and it wasn't quite as glamorous as they had hoped it would be. Dentistry is a good career. It was wonderful to me and for me and my family, but it takes a toll on you too.
