Hardest experiences - Dentist Video Transcripts

There are definitely some hard experiences that you deal with in dentistry. Some of them are patients that just have unrealistic expectations. And that's always frustrating because I truthfully give my all for my patients and sometimes they don't always appreciate it. And even though my crowns and margins of the crowns and fillings are done perfectly, they don't understand that. They just, oh, he was a little rough with me or this or that. It is really frustrating. Sometimes also your office doesn't pay for the best of materials or use the best labs and you get frustrated with those types of things or even fixing the equipment. And so you're having to work with subpar things. And even though you give your best, it's frustrating for sure. So one reason why you should own your own dental practice someday when you're a dentist, if you choose that route.

While dentistry is really fun and really rewarding, it definitely can get stressful at times. I would say that some of the hardest experiences that I have had as a dentist came from situations where treating a pediatric patient, a kid that was really really having a hard time getting the treatment done, or sometimes kids can be doing really well and then in the middle of a procedure things can change out of nowhere. They're a little unpredictable and that can really create some difficult situations. There are certainly times too when just the actual treatment that you're doing, maybe trying to fix a tooth that has a really large cavity or a cavity in a tricky spot, can get difficult. So while dentistry a lot of the times is pretty smooth sailing, it definitely can be stressful and difficult as well.

I'm a retired dentist. I practiced dentistry for 37 years and retired five years ago. In my recollection, the hardest part of dentistry was getting into dental school. It took an extra year of undergraduate work, a total of five years, to get my grades and all the prerequisites sufficient to allow me to get accepted. My son now practices dentistry and I would say for him the hardest part has been paying back the cost of dental education. It's much more expensive now than it was when I went through dental school.

The hardest part of the job was working on little children. It was challenging to manage children under the circumstances where they're often frightened, terrified, and hard to manage. In my career, we seldom referred out children to pedadonus, but if I had it to do over again, I would certainly have done that a lot more times.
