Historically, dentistry has always been a separate branch from the rest of medicine, although certainly the mouth is just as important to the rest of the body, and we confer with our physician colleagues when consulting about patients' needs. Originally, dentistry was in the barbershop. It was a dental barbershop combination. The standards to which dentists are held medically helps keep people safe and helps provide a high standard of care. But the fact that we are separate from medical insurance and separate from some of the medical challenges in a hospital setting or the compartmentalization of some of the rest of medicine provides a good autonomy and a good field.

So there's opportunities to specialize and continue your education past dental school. And some people become really interested in one aspect of dentistry and decide to do that.
