How I got my job - Dentist Video Transcripts

I don't really have a unique story about how I got my job. Once you get into dental school, there's going to be a lot of job offers, usually starting around your third year or so of dental school, which is four years long. Around your third or maybe even your second year, recruiters for different offices will start to come to your school and wonder, you know, what are you doing after school? Do you have any plans? So getting a job is not necessarily a challenge after you've become a dentist. It's getting into dental school and getting through dental school that are the real challenges.

Near the end of dental school you'll have choices, you know, if you are interested in specializing as an orthodontist, pediatric dentist, root canal specialist, endodontist, periodontist, who does gums but also a lot of implants. Those are all different options or a general, you know, I worked hard to be ready to do one of those and then I found I enjoyed the variety of general dentistry. I interviewed and looked at several associateship positions. It's hard to just start as your own solo practitioner right out of school and I don't really recommend that. A group practice is where I'm at currently. I'm with a comfort dental in Colorado and I was surprised how much I enjoy that setting. But to be not the associate also has advantages. Having a mentor is important and so I joined a practice where I have colleagues that I can work with and learn from and support each other.

I've worked in many different dental offices and I've gotten jobs in many different ways. One way I think has been very helpful is speaking with friends within the field, using connections and so forth, or talking with the local reps of the area like the Henry Schein or any rep that works that area, a Patterson rep. I feel like that's a great way to get a job. The least effective way I've gotten jobs is KSL or Craigslist because I feel like it's kind of the bottom of the barrel. You're finding these jobs that they're having a hard time finding anyone else and it's because the jobs aren't the greatest. So I think connections are usually the way to go, but I think you just have to kind of try and put your foot out there to find a good job.
