Crazy stories - Dentist Video Transcripts

I would say that most of my crazy stories come from the more surgical side of dentistry. So I think a lot of people think about dentistry as just maybe doing fillings or cleanings, which is certainly a large part of it. But there's also a more surgical side to dentistry, which usually for a general dentist or an oral surgeon involves extractions. And sometimes when patients come in on emergency visits with a large abscess or a tooth that's really, really decayed that needs to be removed, those procedures can get pretty tricky and sometimes lead to a cool story to share afterwards. So I would say most of my crazy stories come from those type of situations, removing teeth that maybe have really difficult root anatomy or just some sort of challenge in getting the tooth out.

In order to relax my patience, I often would hum or sing a tune. My assistant would say I always sang the last commercial that I heard on the radio before on the way to work. Anyway, it helped sometimes, but I remember one teenager who could not tolerate or stand it any longer, and he reached up. I'm looking down in his face, and he reached up and put his hand over my mouth to tell me that he couldn't take it any longer.

One of them was I just opened up a new office with a business partner. There's this guy that our dental hygienist was just about ready to start cleaning and as soon as she picked up her instruments, this guy passed out basically. He went catatonic, he, you know, we kind of hit his cheek a little bit, wake up, wake up, and he just basically had a nervous reaction to seeing the instruments and kind of freaked out. We ended up having to call the ambulance, but he was fine. He just, you know, in his head he psyched himself out and kind of passed out and needed a little more fluids and so forth, but turned out okay.
