What I wish I knew was that the work-life experience for a dentist can be hard, it can be a time-consuming and so the more you're able to kind of balance and understand your schedule as a dentist moving forward so that you can spend time with your family and do things with others is really important and it'll really go a long way so that you don't feel burnt out soon and so that you can kind of adjust your your schedule so that you can kind of fit the needs of your lifestyle at the time.

One thing I don't think people really realize when they decide to go into dentistry is the cost of becoming a dentist. So it's going to cost you depending on what school you go to, anywhere from $250,000 to, you know, 500 plus thousand dollars. And those loans are going to be with about a seven or 8% interest rate on them. So it is not at all cheap to go to dental school. Now there are different things that, that are available to help pay those loans back. There's the military, there's some programs with, with working in more rural areas that you can get some loan assistance for, but that's probably what I wish I knew most in making the decision to go into dental school is that it is a huge financial commitment.

There's a lot of things that I wish I'd known about dentistry. One of them would be just how demanding it is both mentally and physically. You're always on, you have to be the boss, you have to do a great job and put out a lot of fires throughout the day which can be exhausting. I also wish I had a little better basic financial education. When you're in school and you're taking out some really big loans and then you buy a home and get a home mortgage and quite possibly a practice loan as well. Those can be very big numbers that stick with you for a large part of your life. To have the skills to be able to minimize that is very good. There's lots of online areas where you can learn about that. Another thing is I absolutely recommend disability insurance. You're about seven times more likely to get disabled than you are to die. My guess is for dentists, it's even higher. Get that as soon as possible. Those are the things that we should know.
