Advice for getting started - Dentist Video Transcripts

My advice for getting started in becoming a dentist, you need to talk with your school counselor to see what requisites or prerequisites you'll need to get into dental school. I think that's very important, and also trying to figure out what school you're in is very important, or what school you want to go to at least. Make a map of what you need to do with your schooling so you can get into dental school. So that's the most important thing to do when getting started. Talk with your school counselor. If they have a pre-dental club, join that and go from there.

Dentistry is a profession that's been ranked by many magazines and online evaluators as one of the top professions available. I think the reason is not just the pay, although pay is generally good, but it's a balance of being able to interact with people, having skills that can help improve people's lives, get them out of pain, and give them a great smile. Dentistry is really a combination of your mind skills and hand skills. You're a micro engineer building little bridges, and you need to integrate care for people, compassion for their challenges. So to learn more about dentistry, shadow and talk to dentists and consider if this might be right for you.

If you're interested in a career in dentistry, I would recommend that you would spend time in the office. Go visit different dentists, talk to different people, spend time in the office, make sure it's something you enjoy doing. Best preparation is to spend time observing and asking questions.

So to start out, I would suggest getting ahold of some dental offices around your area and just asking if you can come in and shadow. A lot of dental offices don't mind, you know, whether you're in high school or college, if you have some interest in dentistry, they, they won't mind letting you come in and doing a little shadowing just to see what dentistry is like day to day. And to see if it's something that you would even be interested in before starting, because it is a long process in order to become a dentist. If you do some shadowing and it seems like something that maybe you think you're interested in, then what I would suggest doing next is doing some research with some dental schools, maybe that are in your area, to see what prerequisites those dental schools would have so that you're taking the right classes in undergrad.
