Freshman advice

Hello, so I have three advices that I would give any freshman that is attending BYU-Hawaii. First one is attend a new student orientation. So the NSO team, they have such an amazing program of welcoming new students, so I would highly recommend that you attend all the activities that they provide for your first week in BYU-Hawaii because like it'll give you the opportunity to get familiarized yourself with BYU-Hawaii campus and also PCC and then also a great opportunity for you to find new friends. Second one is to get involved. There's tons of great things about BYU-Hawaii like with all the student clubs and all of those they can be a part of, so get involved, find new friends and also have fun. And the last one is to utilize all the resources that is provided in Hawaii, you know, with all those resources that you definitely can help.

Aloha freshmen, students, welcome to BYU-Hawaii. My best advice that I would give you guys is that really work on your time management and just follow a set schedule and it works for me when I was a freshman and I was able to graduate from BYU-Hawaii just because I tried my best to keep to my schedule. Time management is really important and also make time to have fun by joining extracurricular activities and balance your life while on campus, not just academically but spiritually and physically. So that would be my advice for you guys. Thank you.

Hey freshmen! Some advice that I would give you as you're starting your journey at BYUH is to find a routine that works for you where you're able to get your studies done, but also have time to have fun and explore the island and hang out with your friends. Something that worked for me was to get all my studies done throughout the week so that I could spend all day Saturday exploring the island and hanging out with my friends at the beach. Best of luck to you!

Aloha new freshmen! Congratulations on coming to BYU-Hawaii. My biggest piece of freshman advice would be to not be afraid of making friends and approaching people and asking questions. I went to BYU-Hawaii my freshman year not knowing anyone and that was a really scary thing, but once I started interacting with other students and just getting to know them and asking the questions and getting advice, I found that to be very helpful.

Welcome to your first semester. I know that you're excited to be in BYU-Hawaii and I know that you're gonna love it. This is an advice from an old student. If you're struggling with your classes, you can go to your professor and help you learn more about the topic that you're struggling with. You can, if you're feeling stressed out, depressed, you can go to a consulting center to help you with that. And also make sure you balance your lifestyle, school, work, and social life, and your personal life, so that you can enjoy your time at BYU-Hawaii. Make sure you have, you set your goals and plans throughout the day, throughout the week.

The best advice I can give to freshmen is make sure you get your sleep and especially also study on a full stomach because whenever you're on an empty stomach and you're studying, it's hard to stay focused on being able to do your homework or trying to be on task. And also make sure you get enough sleep because you really do perform poorly in schoolwork and especially on tests even more if you don't have enough sleep. So my word of advice is eat well while you're here and also sleep well. So yeah.

Know that you'll be on a smaller campus and that the teachers always help and you get that help sometimes even individually. You just have to stay positive no matter what challenges you face during the freshman year especially because you're just trying to get in into everything. But there's so many resources and helpful things that you can that people can't help and to choose the subjects and everything you want to work on and there's a lot of opportunity in there.

Aloha, freshman Seasiders. If you're a freshman at BYU-Hawaii, I would recommend for you to take your time, okay. Take your time, don't rush into your first semester or your first week on campus. Also, if you're doing online classes, have a plan, have a calendar, make a to-do list because sometimes you get caught off guard with the load that you're taking of classes and the stress from assignments and even from professors as well. But I advise for you to take your time, take a minute to breathe and make a to-do list. In that way, it will remind you that this is your schedule for the day, this is your schedule for the next day and these are your assignments that you need to prioritize or else you're gonna find yourself, you know, you're gonna drag yourself or drain on the long run. So yeah, but enjoy, enjoy.

I remember when I was a freshman, I just made a lot of friends. I got out of my comfort zone. I said hi to anyone and everyone, mainly girls. I'm not gonna lie, I'm a guy, that's what I do. But just getting to know everyone, like attending all the new student orientation activities. If you're a new student, you need to take part in all these events. You need to take a campus tour, go to the pizza games or whatever games they have, take the PCC tour, see the night show. You need to attend all these activities because this is the place that you will make a lot of friends and connections. But yeah, just say hi to everyone. Everyone, and I mean everyone. Do it.

Video 10 - Transcription

My number one thing is be involved and find your group, find your friends, because my first semester was really hard because I was really really focused on school and that was a great thing too, but like I prioritized school over everything and I didn't have any fun. I was pretty miserable. I went to the beach, but I went by myself and it was sad, but then like the next semester I got a job as a tour guide and I found my group and it made the experience so much better.

Video 11 - Transcription

Aloha freshmen and welcome to BYU-Hawaii and I think the first advice I would like to give to you is to always like open your ears and open your eyes to every possible opportunities to learn and grow and connect with your friends. I think for this first semester is the the most fun moment for all of us like to make new friends and then to know like other cultures. It might be like overwhelming to know like so many cultures, different cultures, but I think we are really blessed to be able to expand our knowledge about this world from different cultures. Thank you.

Participate to everything that you can get involved in, to culture night, to food fest, to different clubs, meet new people, sit with someone new at the cafeteria. That's how you really get to make this place your own and meet amazing people.

Video 13 - Transcription

Talk to the locals, get out of your hale, get out of just your small group of friends, especially those from your country who speak your same language, and get to know other people. The diversity opportunities that exist at BYU-Hawaii are truly unique. In addition, I had the privilege of teaching a course as a recent graduate called Honors 100 Introduction to University Life. So there are specific formal opportunities and resources for incoming freshmen, but I always found it useful to, even if I didn't have a class, go walk around campus in a building I didn't know, familiarize myself, try to make friends from at least one major throughout campus, or in other words, have a friend that is from almost any major or from any college or any department, just so when they're having events and when they have opportunities that I'm aware of, just get out of yourself.
