Student jobs - Brigham Young University-Hawaii Video Transcripts

There are lots of opportunities for jobs on campus. They try really hard to make them available for students. The biggest one of course is the Polynesian Cultural Center and if you're an international student that's an especially good option if you want to join the iWork program where your salary that you make at the PCC is used to subsidize your tuition. There are also other opportunities on campus. I did work on campus at the Testing Center and that was a really great opportunity and experience and I really enjoyed working there. At PCC there's a lot of opportunities but there's also restaurants. My husband worked at Pounder's Restaurant at PCC as their sous chef and he really enjoyed that as well. But even in the town of Lafayette there are some opportunities including working at Foodland or working at the bank or at any of the restaurants.

Campus jobs, like you can work security, you can work cafeteria, you can work janitorial jobs, you can work at the activity center, you can work in the offices, but you can also work at the Polynesian Cultural Center. There's so many different jobs over there. Working over there for sure will give you a great perspective and probably future employment opportunity in hospitality and tourism and probably business and even if it's not and probably in other ones just because of how many people can connect with by working at the PCC. By far my favorite job was being a tour guide because I could talk to people the whole day and walk the whole day.

I worked as a digital content specialist slash trainer on campus, and what I did was focused on updating the website and training professors how to update their section of the website for specific majors. I really enjoyed doing that, especially because you see that some parts of the website are pretty old and out-to-date, and so I got to help design and upload new content and make the website more user-friendly for people, and train professors how to do that for themselves too.

There are lots and lots and lots of opportunities. I'll never say that something is easy to get, but definitely there are plentiful opportunities. I worked as a tour guide and I loved it and I also worked as a TA and I was assistant on the lab and I loved it as well. A lot of these jobs actually I learned about them from people I made friends with and I asked them how they liked their jobs. Certainly jobs will be available and I would say probably have a pick of them, but I would say ask. Ask what your friends do and how they like it. You might find yourself having lots of fun. For me, for instance, going to the Volunteering and Culture Center and giving tours, I never saw it really as a job, but it was a great opportunity to have fun and getting paid for it and get to meet great people.

At BGU Hawaii, they usually offer a ton of job opportunities for students, especially at the PCC or Polynesian Cultural Center, or if you want to have a job on campus, then they have a lot of jobs too. Most of them are like TA or working at the Writing Center, or it can be like a cleaner, you know, it depends. It's really nice, and I really like it a lot, especially I used to work at a PCC before, and now I'm, you know, somewhere else, so I'm just waiting to go back to Hawaii and try to find more jobs, but you should go look it up on Workday, they have a lot of job opportunities out there.

WA, Hawaii and PCC, they both offer jobs for students, doesn't matter if you're from Asia or from the Pacific or from the mainland or here in Hawaii, they provide jobs and you have to apply for it just like you're applying for jobs in the real world, right? You can work at PCC, you can become a dancer, you can work at the marketplace, you can work as a security guard, there's a lot. And even on campus, there's a lot of office jobs you can work. Also, there's TAs, also you can work at FM, Facility Management, and some students are RA, or Residential Advisors, so it's really fun. You just have to find the job that you know you will enjoy and give you skills that you need for the future in your career.

So after my mission to Tonga, I was able to spend just one semester at BYU-Hawaii, but while I was there, I had my favorite job I have ever had. Even now at 55 years old, my favorite job in the world was working as a canoe boy at the Polynesian Culture Center. It was so much fun and I have so many great memories of friends that I met there and mission friends that I was able to reconnect with. Polynesian's Cultural Center is an awesome place to work and I encourage everyone to get a job there while you're at BYU-Hawaii.

So the great thing about BYU-Hawaii is that there's a ton of student jobs. Like, if you want a job, then you have a job, and if you don't have a job, it's because you don't want a job. It's really great because you can get a job on campus, you can get a job at the Marriott, you can get a job at the PCC, the Polynesian Cultural Center, and there's really like a job for everyone. Things might be a little bit different now because of COVID and everything, but yeah, if you don't get a job, it's because you don't want one.
