Advice for getting started
Watch VideosHi, my name is Trent Goodmanson. That's how I spell my name and how to find me online and on social media. I am a traditional oil painter. I have been doing this full-time for about 25 years and I would recommend to those wanting to get started that you first get two books. One is called The Art Spirit by Robert Henri. That's H-E-N-R-I. The other is Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting. And even if you don't want to be a landscape painter, I would still recommend that book. It gives you lots of good advice. It's by John F. Carlson. I would also subscribe to some art magazines, Southwest Art, Art of the West. There are lots of them out there just to see what's going on in the art world right now. I would also seek out some local or regional painters. Most of them are willing to help.
I'm Brent Borup. My advice as an artist for getting started. Realize you can do this as a little side hustle for a while first. My own experience, what I wanted to do was make sure I can make a living as an artist first before I jumped in full-time. So I kind of kept my finances separate. I looked at what I made as my side, as my day job, and then I looked at what I was making as an artist. Once I knew that I could survive just as an artist, then I could move over and switch to full-time. My own personal experience, I was lucky because I was laid off from my day job at about the right point where I said, well, might as well start. I'm doing this full-time. So that would be my advice is, you know, have fun, do what you want to do, be an artist, but make sure you're responsible about it first.
