One common misconception I think people may have about artists is that they have a romantic type of lifestyle, an idealized version, where they picnic in the mountains with other artists and talk about poetry and eat fancy cheese and things like that. And the fact is, being an artist, I spend most of my time at my studio. It happens to be attached to my home. It's a lot of work, you know, I have to come up with ideas. I have to, of course, create the paintings and sometimes they're very difficult. I have to package them and frame them and do a lot of market research and upkeep my website, things like that. It's work. It's enjoyable work. I really do love it, but it is still work.

I'm Brent Borup. Common misconceptions about being an artist is the fact that I don't do a lot of art all the time. People think I just I paint all day or you know create art all day, but a lot of what I'm doing is trying to run a business. Whether it be working on my website, posting social media ads, or fulfilling orders, printing, shipping, you know signing up for art shows. There's lots of business I have to do to be a full-time artist and I wish I could just stay home and paint all day, but that doesn't always happen. So that's the main misconception I think. So if you want to be an artist, learn about marketing, learn about business, or be prepared to hire someone to do all that for you. It's not just about creating art.
