Favorite foods
Watch VideosI can't think of a German food that I didn't like. Probably some of my favorite, I loved Rotkohl. It's like sauerkraut, but with red cabbage, and it has a completely different taste than sauerkraut. You either really like it or you really don't, so I won't be offended if you don't like it. But it's super, super good, and it was like my favorite thing at dinner appointments. There's also this stuff called Gulasch, and they put it on top of either potatoes or like Spätzle, which is kind of like noodles, and it's so, so good. And they serve that with Rotkohl, and it's just super good. And yeah, Germans, lots of meat, lots of potatoes, tons of gravy, always with Rotkohl or sauerkraut, and it's the best. I love it.
My favorite German food's first of all döner, some places call it kebab. It is a German food, it has Turkish influence, but it was invented in Germany, as far as I understand it, and it's delicious. It's kind of, I guess, this roasted meat, it's roasted on a spit in some flatbread with some sauce and some vegetables in it. Super delicious. And then Knödel, which are dumplings. I really like Spinat Knödel, which are spinach dumplings. It doesn't sound like it'll be good, but it's delicious.
I do enjoy German food a lot. My favorite German food is Spätzle. It's this noodle, this egg noodle, and it's really good.
If you ever see any kind of a little food truck that says currywurst, you should get it. It's got, it's just, it's their version of fast food. It usually comes with fries and it's like a hot dog with curry on top, like a kind of a ketchup, curry ketchup. And it usually comes with brötchen, which is like a hard, yummy, hard on the outside, soft on the inside roll. So that's really good. Also, if you ever find rouladen, they're really good with their meat. Rouladen is really, really yummy. And if you go to the grocery store, any of their yogurt, stracciatella yogurt's really good. And their pudding is delicious. Obviously their chocolate is just outstanding. One other thing, if you want to be their best friend ever, make some chocolate chip cookies. Cause that is something that I made for the school once. And they were just like knocking down my door for the recipe. I guess they've, chocolate chip cookies are not a thing there. They love them.
The best food you can get in Bavaria, Germany is pretzels. You have to get the soft baked pretzels. You can buy them anywhere, like they're literally at all the grocery stores. They're so good. You eat them with butter. Like, I have a pretzel bracelet and necklace and a pillow. Like, I love pretzels. So get them. You cannot get pretzels like these anywhere else. And they're better in Austria. Like, if you're ever in Austria, if you go to the Hofer Aldi, they're the best there. Highly recommend.
Okay, so I was a little freaked out about the food at first in Germany. I wasn't sure, you know, what I was going to have, but I actually came to love it. Pretty much at every meal, you'll get some sort of potatoes. Germans love potatoes. You eat potatoes a ton. You'll get some sort of vegetable. A lot of times it's rotkohl, which is red cabbage. And then you'll usually get some sort of meat. Sometimes you get pork. Frequently, I had a lot of pork and I liked it. I enjoyed it. Uh, some of my other favorites, Knudel, which is kind of like these like potato dumpling things that are super good. You'll learn to love those. Um, and then you'll get your good German street food, kind of Turkish food, like dinner kebabs, super good, all stuff that I really miss. So you're going to enjoy it. Even if at first it's a little like weird, you'll really love it and you'll miss it when you go home.
I am a sucker for German food. I know that about myself. I think one of the best foods in the whole entire world is Spätzle. It's just so good. You put all those different cheeses in that little noodle and beautiful. And I love sauerkraut and sometimes they'll put like bacon in it and caramelized onions. It is so so good. I am just a sucker for German food. I honestly think it's some of the best food in the whole wide world and it's worth eating.
If you want to learn about savory German food, you better go watch another video. If you want to learn about sweet German food, you talk to me. I ate so many sugary, delicious goodness in Germany. It's amazing. The quality of everything is just awesome. You need to learn one word, and that is Konditorei. Say it after me. Konditorei. That's your cake shop, that's your sweet shop, that's the best shop. You can get Sahnetorte there, that's my favorite, the cream cakes, and Käsekuchen, the cheesecakes, all the cakes. In Germany, the ice cream is delicious, their cookies are delicious, chocolate's delicious. Even in the grocery store, man, the quality of their grocery store freezer cakes, gorgeous, delicious. It's just such a pleasure to walk down that aisle and see all those cakes. It just makes me so happy.
There's super good street food, depending on where you're on in Germany, but there's usually going to be good street sausages, good kebabs you can get, and shopping is also super different in Germany. Their grocery stores are a lot more smaller and simple, unless you go farther to get to one of the bigger stores, depending on the city. But they have great cereal, like everything's like simple but good, and probably my favorite thing by far is the nougat bits. It's just the cereal that's like a pillow with Nutella inside, and I could eat it all day. So good. But don't abuse it. Well, you can abuse it if you want.
There are so many delicious and good foods in Germany. So there's this thing that's called Leibkuchen and it's really big at Christmas time. It's kind of like gingerbread but softer and better and it's absolutely incredible, especially even Nuremberg. They have the best Leibkuchen, especially at the Christmas market there. And then Schnitzel, which is like breaded pork. You can also get it with different meats, but that is incredible, especially with lemon juice on it. And then just potatoes, the french fries there are incredible. Rotkohl and sauerkraut are absolutely incredible, especially homemade. And it's just so delicious. And they also like to make sparkling water with fruit juice and it tastes super good, especially homemade. It is delicious.
German food is amazing. I love it so much. Whenever, whenever I'm in Germany, I gotta get a good pretzel. So I love, I love the pretzels. They're just so good. Oh my goodness. And their bratwurst is wonderful. You can buy it on the street. Also they have these things, it's like a Turkish-German invention, I guess. It was invented in Germany by a Turkish person. It's called döner. And it's like this flatbread and they shave this meat off of the spit and they put it all in there with some vegetables and a beautiful sauce. And it just tastes so good. And also, like, there's so much good food. They have amazing meats, potatoes, vegetables, salads. I just love and obsess with German food. It's so fresh and so great.
So German food is so good. One of my favorite things, it's called currywurst, and it's basically like a sausage or a brat just cut up into little slices. You can get it sliced or not. I like it sliced. And then they'll put this sauce on top. It's like, it's called curry ketchup, and it's basically ketchup, but then it has a bunch of curry powder in it, and they've added a couple things too. And it's so good. So they have that. Sometimes they'll put little onion bits on top. And then you eat it with fries and then mayo and ketchup. And mayo in Germany is so good, like to die for. I don't like mayo in America, but mayo in Germany is so good. And so with the amazing fries and with the currywurst, it's really just the happiest ever.
Spätzle, which is basically like a noodle, a handmade noodle that's so good. Rouladen, which is this marinated meat and, gosh, schnitzel. Döners are really good. It's making me hungry.
German food is pretty great. I still think about it, and I still eat it to this day, and it's been a little while since I've gone home. But the chocolate is pretty amazing, and the bread, they have like bakeries everywhere, and the bread's like crunchy on the outside, but soft in the middle. It's pretty great. I once had some Germans describe the American bread to me as like an accordion, just because it's so squishy, but over there, it's just pretty dense and delicious. And then the schnitzel's good. It's kind of like a chicken fried steak, but German style. And just like all the authentic German food, they have like dumplings, and like meat, and like gravy they put on it, and yeah, there's just, I say ice cream, their ice cream's good too. There's lots of good stuff.
On the streets of Germany, if you know where to look, you will find a shack. Many shacks, really. In northern Germany, at least. In this shack, you will find a fat Turkish man and possibly his sons and or children, maybe relatives and cousins. This man will have a machete and a greased apron. You will ask for food from this man and he will slice, shave off meat, slice it off with his machete from this rotisserie kebab. Unidentified meat, possibly dog, most likely turkey, lamb, and cow. And then he will put this meat in a bread wrap. He will put vegetables and unidentified sauces on it and he will hand it to you for a very low amount of money. You will eat it and it will be delicious. You might get sick, but that, that is a dinner. Favorite food number two is the glorious, glorious thing called Wurst in Germany. Because you see, in Germany, they actually make their sausages really, really good. So things like Weißwurst, Nürnberger Bratwurst, glorious, glorious things.
I really like schnitzel. Schnitzel is amazing. I also like the cordon bleu that they have. Usually when they have schnitzel they'll have like a cordon bleu option and I don't know if that's strictly German but it's or you know like Bavarian or whatever but it's super good so I always go for that. I love sauerkraut so if you're into sauerkraut it's delicious.
A pretty standard German dish that's actually one of my favorites. They have this thing called sauerbraten, which is some kind of meat and delicious gravy. They'll put some mashed potatoes with that, something called klöse, which is... how do you describe klöse? Similar to mashed potatoes. And then they have red cabbage, which you may think sounds disgusting, you also may think smells disgusting, but is actually surprisingly good. You put that all together on one plate, and it's just the most heavenly thing that you will ever eat. It's fantastic. Um, ooh, ooh, ooh, every city, every city, they have these, uh, these little shops run by Turkish guys, and they sell the dunas, which are kind of like, um, they're kind of like the gyros they eat here, like the Greek food, but a million times better. It's like a ton of meat, the sauces, it's... I can't even describe it, it's just so good.
