Extreme weather - Germany Video Transcripts

It was raining, it was in Frankfurt and it was raining so hard that you walked outside and you were soaked, like you literally two seconds and you were soaked. But that doesn't happen super often, a lot of the time during the winter it like mists and it's just kind of wet outside, which makes it really cold, so you're going to want to bring a lot of layers to wear because no matter how much you're wearing you're still going to be cold, so put as much as you can on. And then in the summer it gets really really hot and there's no air conditioning, there's like, yeah, you just got to figure out how to open your windows and try to keep your apartment cool and just go outside where it's a lot, well not really cooler, but there's at least airflow outside.

In Germany it's very humid so on the winter and kind of summer months you get more extreme weather. So I remember a lot of days in the summer where it was so hot and I get so sweaty because the humidity but in the winter it is so cold and no matter it feels like no matter how many layers you put on you're so cold you're freezing. So those two months can be pretty difficult however spring and fall are usually so nice and I think there's nothing better than a spring or a fall day in Germany. It's super nice, great weather.

There was this hurricane that came in. It was really, really strong winds, and just like crazy amount of rain, some hail. It was just really crazy weather. Germany had even cancelled schools for that day because the weather was supposed to be super bad, and there wasn't really anybody out on the streets. The weather, I mean, it was raining cats and dogs. The wind was incredibly strong, and hail, and just really, really whack weather that was a result of a hurricane.

I'll tell you about the fog. So there's an immense amount of fog, especially if you're near large bodies of water and it's cold outside because humidity plus water equals fog. So usually in the morning we would go for our morning sport, a morgan sport, and we'd have to carefully navigate through the fog because it was that dense. Luckily I had a light on my bike and so we were able to be yeah you can't see really 20 feet in front of you or once you get through you can't really see 20 feet behind you either. Usually in the day it clears but in the morning that's when all the fog just sits and rests and then eventually lifts. It's crazy, it's really cool.

There will be times of the year, like near the end of the year, like in the fall time, and then right near the beginning you'll get what my companions and I always called your four seasons a day thing, and it would hail and rain and snow and be so sunny all in one day, sometimes within just a couple hours.

The craziest weather you're going to get is just rain. It does snow in the winter. I say, I guess I say rain just because I'm from Arizona, didn't get lots of rain, went to Germany and it rained straight for like a month and I was just like holy cow and I would come home, my shoes I like would fill with water, there was so much rain. But I mean it's not like, I think it rains more in the Philippines, but yeah, it just, it rains a lot, it's all good, it gets hot in the summer, there's no air conditioning, but for the most part it's not anything that you can't survive, like you'll survive, it'll be good.

So, the weather's not too crazy, but it can rain a lot, and it can rain hard. So, I mean, probably not nearly as much as, like, South America, but just one thing I have learned, always take an umbrella. Always have an umbrella, because you never know when it's going to rain, and it likes to rain in Germany. It's a cloudy place, and so just make sure you're always prepared. Be a Boy Scout.

While I was serving in Mannheim, my companion and I were about a block away from our apartment and we just got, you know, we look up and there's this big huge wall of water coming towards us and so we start looking at home and by the time we get home we are drenched from head to toe and we're just covered in dirt and leaves, like basically anything that was on the ground that was blown up, but that was probably the craziest that I was caught into.

Depending on where you are in Germany, the weather can get pretty crazy. If you're on, if you're close to a river, it'll get pretty cold. Like we had, we had negative six degrees Fahrenheit one time, which is like negative 22 Celsius. That was pretty cold. There was one day though, in like March, when the weather changed like every 30 minutes. We're sitting inside doing our studies and it was sunny, and suddenly it was cold and rainy, and then a half hour later it was sunny again, half hour later, cold and rainy. Just the weirdest state, half hour incommensurate, bad weather, good weather, for like three hours. It was super weird.

Weather over in Germany is, it actually gets, can get really hot in the summer so just prepare to be sweating, specifically in August and end of July, August it can get really really hot. It'll rain for a couple days, which keeps everything really green. One year I had snow and the other year I didn't, so it kind of just fluctuates. There are four seasons, but just good to keep in mind.

There's like no tornadoes or crazy storms because yeah, it doesn't really happen. Sometimes it rains pretty bad, kind of, and sometimes it gets really cold because it's humid. And so like if you're outside working, it can be kind of really cold. That's when you find out how great scarfs are. Even if you didn't wear them before, you just find out that they're really warm and great. And yeah, sometimes it's gray in the winter, but it doesn't really snow that much.

Yeah, the weather usually has its own mind. One day it would be completely sunny, no clouds or anything, and the next day it'll just be pouring rain or snowing. It snowed in May. I come from the desert, so we don't get any snow, and so that was a big surprise, and just for it to have winter last that long was crazy to me. Quick story, it was pouring and we left the house, and then we got to the bus stop, and the wind was just blowing and blowing rain into us from the side, so our umbrellas really didn't do anything. I ended up lifting one of my companions, my companion's umbrella, soaking her, and our feet were just completely soaked, and we get on the bus, and we're just wringing out our clothes, and it rains a lot there. I recommend rain boots and a good rain jacket and a sturdy umbrella.
