One of the biggest misconceptions about being an accountant is that it's all about numbers, and it is way more than about numbers. It's what I would like to say the law of numbers. There's nothing but codification, concepts, methodologies, way more than just numbers.

I want to talk about two misconceptions of accounting. First is that it's math intensive. You need to be a math wizard in order to be an accountant. That's just not the case. What kind of math do we do in accounting? Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. That's it. Most of this can be done on like a toy calculator you would find in a toy store. Second is that accounting is an isolated career. You're going to be by yourself in an office, just you and a computer typing away. Again, that's not the case. It's extremely collaborative. Accountants work in teams. Accountants are constantly making decisions based on the input of other people and getting input from other people. It is extremely collaborative.

I would say that a common misconception of accountants are that they are boring or not exciting and that they don't like people. And I would say that is the exact opposite of my experience. I think that a lot of times someone who is in accounting, you might start off where you're working kind of on your own, calculating things and preparing documents, but soon enough you need to be able to speak to clients and speak with your team members. And so there's a lot of people working with people that is part of being an accountant. And we are definitely not boring. Some of the most accomplished and amazing people I know are accountants.
