Extreme weather
Watch VideosThe spring of 2013 in March. Once we got to Tata Banya, it began to really snow. We decided, my companion and I, that we would try to get back to our city in Budapest. When we got on the freeway to drive home, the snow was so bad. Traffic had become stopped in many locations and at one point we didn't move for up to 30 minutes. We decided we would turn around and go back and stay in Tata Banya. That morning when we woke up, there in some places there was two to four feet of snow and there was cars that had been on the interstate all night. Several people passed away just because of the cold and being stuck in their car all night.
There were a couple of times where the weather got a little bit dicey. It was like in April, I think it was like April 15th or something. And I was in Budapest at the time and it just woke up and it was just snowing. It was like hail, rain, snow, everything, everything you can imagine. And so we had to carry our bags all over the place, on the metro, on the trams and everything. And it was just really insane, just due to the craziness and just the random chance that in the middle of April that you would get a blizzard happening. One of the funnest memories I have.
I just remember a couple times it just dumps rain. I was watching basically a river of water come down the street because the street was kind of sloped and so we were just watching like a river come down the street.
When it rains in Hungary, it rains. One night my companion and I were headed back to our apartment after some late night finding on our bikes and we got caught in a major rainstorm. It was every man for himself. We rode as fast as we could to get back to our apartment. Coming around a turn, my companion and I were hydroplaning on our bikes just coasting around the turn into our apartment. By the time we got back into our apartment we were completely soaked. It rained and rained that night for about three hours. Several places in the city, the sewer drains backed up and they were just spilling water all the next day, which is pretty common in Hungary because their sewers aren't very good. So even in the bigger cities like Budapest and Page and Debrecen, sometimes the sewers will back up with all the rainwater. So make sure if you go to Hungary that you pack a good rain jacket and have an umbrella if it looks like it's going to rain.
To be honest, Hungary doesn't really have that much crazy weather. One crazy weather story I had was out in a city of Pecs, which is one of the southernmost cities of Hungary, and all of a sudden this huge storm came out of nowhere and we literally saw a lightning strike right above our heads. And the moment it struck, I mean, we could hear the lightning bolt and it was so loud. We both jumped up super high, booked it back home. Other than that, it really isn't that crazy, but it's good weather.
