History - Hungary Video Transcripts

So Hungary has kind of a sad history. They've gotten beat up a lot throughout the past. The Turks ran through, they were under the communism by Russia. After World War I, they lost about two-thirds of their land because they were on the wrong side of the war. And so they still feel that in their culture. And you can see signs of it with a lot of the older people there who remember a lot of these experiences. And so that's definitely something to keep, remember when you're there.

A lot of people left the country in 1956 when there was the revolution and the communes, the Russian regime, the Soviet Union came in and really squashed Hungary's desire for more freedoms. A lot of people fled Hungary at the time and went to other countries, went west, even went to America. And something that's pretty interesting is here in America, one of the most populous cities of Hungarian people that came over in 1956 is in Cleveland, Ohio. So there's pockets of Hungarians just right there in Cleveland that historically did come in 1956, and they've grown up in America, but they still hold their culture and their language in high regard. There's Hungarian restaurants throughout these pockets in Ohio, so pretty interesting.

So the history of Hungary is pretty amazing because right there in the middle of Central Europe, Hungary's been at the crossroads of so many different things over time and I loved studying the history of Hungary and learning more about it because coming from a country that was only 200 years old and then going over to a country that was a thousand years old was pretty remarkable and finding out how they became a Christian nation through King Stephen and then just how the people have been very resilient over time to just survive culturally with their language has been amazing. So I'm excited to talk about Hungary and the history of it and to send more videos here and tell you what I've learned and how I've appreciated and loved the Hungarian people.
