What’s your favorite thing about living in American Fork?

What’s your least favorite thing about living in American Fork?

What’s the crime like in American Fork?

It seems to be worse than a lot of places in UT, but still better than places that are known for it (like Ogden). So…Medium? (compared to other UT cities). (Jenna, 3.5 years)

In the sketchy home areas and around the east side by Walmart, it is not good to be out past dark. The west side near the hospital is nice. (Sarah, 15 years)

Relatively low, however it has significantly increased around the Walmart/Home Depot strip mall area over the past few years. (Jake, 19 years)
It’s pretty low key, however, it is increasing. Especially in older neighborhoods. Also, pan handlers and homelessness is on the rise. (Anonymous, 19 years)

Terrible…the last five years have seen a huge influx of drug use and thefts. The businesses on main street have things being stolen from them on a daily basis. Heroin junkies are running rampant, and causing a lot of problems. (Anonymous, 30 years)

The cost of living is too high, the taxes keep going up, money is being spent on the “parcs” and not roads and business improvement. Neighborhoods aren’t safe anymore. Move to Lehi, and wait for American Fork to get their act together. (Anonymous, 30 years)

I grew up in American Fork and attended school there. They have amazing activities like the steel days parade, a great high school I attended- it is a fun family friendly place. (Jake, 19 years)
I Remember waking up in the summer to running water behind our house. It was irrigation for the properties south of us. (Staci, 21 years)
I called the police on a couple who was on my property that were obviously high. The police officer that responded knew who they were and stated that they were a local problem, gave them a warning, and let them go. My neighbors weren’t so lucky and were broken into the next day. Even with camera footage the perpetrators are getting away because the system is too full and the drug problem is out of control. (Anonymous, 30 years)
My high school years were the best! I was blown away by the sense of unity and power we had as a school. I loved the songs and traditions. It makes me tear up to sing the school song now when the band goes by in the parade. Go Cavemen! (Karen, 40 years)

How do you think American Fork will change over the next 10 years?

Population will increase and more building will happen, they’ve already started building houses on the same hill as the cemetery, making tombstones lawn decorations. They have also eliminated a park next to the recreational center, and started putting the cemetery in its place. (Jake, 19 years)

If change doesn’t happen, more businesses will leave. Look at how many vacant spaces are on main street and in the meadows… even AT&T moved out of AF to Lehi a half a block away. Not to mention Nuttals Fabric (an American Fork Staple)…they moved across the street from the American Fork border in Pleasant Grove. There aren’t incentives for businesses, but they carry a bulk of the sales tax that can help improve roads, and pay for numerous other city expenses. You would think the city would try and get on top of the businesses fleeing before it becomes a ghost town like PG. If the drug problem isn’t addressed, then American Fork is going to be like the next Taylorsville. With proper enforcement and neighborhood awareness, we can use the community to band together to be more aware of the problem. As long as everyone keeps turning a blind eye to the problem, then the situation will not get better. I personally have gone to over three dozen drug overdose funerals in American Fork in two years…Two YEARS! Friends, neighbors, family…it is a huge problem in American Fork. (Anonymous, 30 years)
Like I said, I am sad to see such important buildings torn down and such disheartening ones put in their place. I’m afraid we’ve lost a city center to commerce. I see that American Fork will continue to give into commerce, and get eaten from the inside out. PG and Lehi have been able to maintain the integrity of their downtown areas. Ours looks slummy and uninviting. I think this may continue, but I am hoping that we can do something to revitalize our downtown area. It started in the 70s with tearing down the houses on 100 East for the big grocery store. (Karen, 40 years)

If you don’t take advantage of AF Canyon, you’re missing out! (Bree, 11 years)
It is home to 25,000 or so people. Also, home to an LDS Temple. (Kyle, 11 years)
Most of American Fork used to be farm land. (Jake, 19 years)
On 5th east there was an old house foundation by a ton of trees. We learned it was used a hundred years ago or so for hunting. (Staci, 21 years)

100 years ago, citizens were more tolerant to bars and having adult fun. Geneva amusement park was popular at Lindon Boat Club and there was a dance hall in AF Canyon. (Nancy, 57 years)
