Advice for getting started
Watch VideosIf you're interested in working in a home care industry, I would recommend seeking out a part-time job with a home care agency just to get your feet wet, get a feel for whether or not that's the kind of work you'd like to be involved with. Sometimes as an agency owner you do have to go fill in, but in general it's helpful to know what employees are doing and what it's like to be in someone's home giving one-on-one personalized care. Also it would help you understand what it's like to be an employee in that kind of company and see perhaps things you do or don't like about the various owners of these companies and how they run things, just different policies and procedures. So that's a good way to kind of get your feet wet without a lot of commitment. A lot of home care employees will do it on the part-time side gig, so you don't have to commit with a full-time schedule.
I first learned about senior care agencies when I was approached by a franchise through LinkedIn. They found my profile, approached me, asked if I would be interested in opening franchise territory. And as I looked more into the business, I realized it was a really good fit for my skill set and my interests. I love serving people. I like managing craziness, busyness. Lots of people, lots of moving parts and communicating. Those are my skill sets. So I initially got started by interviewing them and them interviewing me and deciding that we would work together and that I would learn the business from them. Of course, looking back now, I think, oh, I could have done that without help and just hired a private consultant. But I am very grateful for a franchise that supports me and helps me along the way. So I found it great to work together.
