Tips for success
Watch VideosWhen I began my career as a motivational speaker, I was told that all you had to do was be great on stage and that was enough, that you would have plenty of opportunities and you would get to do your event and speak, and that was enough. Well, I do wish I'd have known something a little bit more, and that was to write a book. A lot of people told me, hey, it's okay to write a book, and other people said, you don't need a book. Well, my friends, I finally wrote a book. I call it, can we see it? The Promise to the One, there it is. The Promise to the One. I released this in 2020, and this book did well on Amazon, but why am I showing it to you? Because as you write your book, it's going to change the way that you deliver your speech. You're going to be able to articulate better, and you're going to have something that you can offer as a sale in the back of the room, or even as a gift to the person who's going to book you. It works. Write a book.
Here's a tip for success. In the speaking world, it's so essential to do the opposite once in a while. For example, if you tend to work extra hard at your career, your job, all those types of things, and you work just harder than everybody else, I would recommend you do the opposite once in a while. Relax. Slow down. Keep a promise to your health, to yourself. Sleep a little bit. If you're the opposite, if you're thinking, hey, you know, I'm just going to lazily go about my life, and I'm just going to get the gigs when they come, and so forth, I would say push the pedal to the metal. Go for it. Push yourself a little bit more. Make a greater promise to run your business in a successful way. And so, I know this is a tip for success you may never have thought of, but I would say once in a while, do the opposite.
Okay, here are five things that every speaker needs to consider or soon to become speaker. Number one, who's your audience? Who do you want to speak to? And also I would ask in that same question, who's the decision maker? Who are the people that will actually pay to bring you in to speak? Second, what is the problem that you solve for that organization, for that individual? Can you answer that in one question? In one question, what problem do you solve? Number three, craftsmanship. You've got to be good on stage. You've got to know how to tell a great story. You've got to be funny. You've got to be entertaining. You've got to be engaging to some degree. Number four, get a board of mentors. Find people that are doing what you want to do, that are living the life you want to live, that are speakers like you want to speak and do whatever it takes to associate with them. And then the last thing, number five, is your promo video.
