Common misconceptions
Watch VideosMisconceptions as an insurance agent is that you're just going to be making cold calls all day. I have never made a single cold call in the last two and a half years of being an insurance agent. Some days are slow for sure, but there's a lot of opportunity without making cold calls. So if that's a big reason that you're turned away from this profession, don't let that stop you. There's so many opportunities without just having to cold call lists all day.
One of the biggest misconceptions in insurance is that all insurance companies are the same. They're not. Each of them take on the risk that they're willing to take on. That's how they choose their rates. Some kind of look for the low hanging fruit with state minimums and just get as many as they can. Others try to get kind of more established people and so their rates are lower for those type people. You can't control the rate as an insurance agent. The company you work for controls that rate. One of the other things is just people thinking that every insurance company is the same. Again, they're not. There's independent, there's brokers, there's captive agents, and all these different companies are very, very different in how they do everything. So if you're looking for insurance, you talk to a bunch of different insurance companies. If you're looking to go in and be an agent, you talk to a whole bunch and that way you can kind of learn how that company works.
The biggest common misconception I hear is that people say full coverage on their insurance. That's not an actual insurance term. I've heard people describe it like 13 different ways. For most people, full coverage, air quotes here, means that they have comp and collision, and a lot of people think that that also means that they have emergency roadside, that they have rental car coverage, and a whole bunch of other things. Um, that is the biggest misconception that I hear all the time.
