Advice for getting started

So if you're getting started, I would really just look around for a good firm that you love the culture, and if you're going through a graduate program, you're going to have relationships. Just keep in mind that as you're getting started, you're going to want to have an idea of the niche that you want to do. So are you going to help small business owners? Are you going to help people who work at the local hospital with their retirement accounts? Find your niche, think about that in advance, and then find the firm that has a culture that you like and that you agree with their investment philosophy. So if you're a low-risk person, don't work for a firm that is chasing the biggest return and has higher risks. Find one that matches. Find a good culture. Get started there.

So I've been working in accounting for, I don't know, five, six years, and I decided that I wanted to get into more personal nature with people. I had a friend that was a financial advisor. He was older than me by about 20 years. And so I would talk with him and he would give me advice. And then one day as we were talking, he said, you know, if you ever decide that you really want to become a financial advisor, let me know. And I said, Hey, I'm, I'm ready. I want to, I want to get out of what I'm doing. And so I started with him as an assistant. And over time, we decided that I would be kind of his exit strategy, that in time, I would take over his book. And so my recommendation is to perhaps find somebody that's looking for a junior, junior advisor and link in with them and take over that book. That's a great way to start. It's worked well for me and it's been fun so far.
