Advice for getting started
Watch VideosI think my biggest advice for getting started in a door-to-door sales environment is to, one, find a company that you're really comfortable with and that has a culture that you like and that you like, and then, two, find an industry that you like. So industries range in between, you know, a harder, more intricate sell that you make a higher commission on, in between a less intricate sell that's a smaller decision for the homeowner. You make less of a commission on it, but you can sell a higher volume on it. Past control falls into a category of a less intricate sell where more homeowners will buy more quickly than a solar sell or a security sell, for example, but I would definitely go sit down with multiple companies because each company will have a very different culture, and you want to set yourself up for success with a good manager and with a good culture. So find the culture that you really like the best, that you fit into the best, and then find a position that you're going to be in where you will get the training that you need.
So if you decided that you wanted to do door-to-door sales, but you don't know where to start, I honestly would just say just start somewhere. Especially if you're in Utah, it is so easy just to find a door-to-door sales company, and I would just meet with whoever you find. Literally, just whatever company you can find, sit down, meet with them. And I wouldn't, I would also say don't settle for one company as well. Make sure you ask around, offer, see what they can give you, and see what the best fit is for you.
The best way to get started with door-to-door salesmanship is to be able to give yourself experiences. Just get out there and try it. Make up your own stuff, sell something, maybe it's jewelry, otter pops, or just offering to mow their lawns. Do that practice at every rejection and figure out why. Did it take you forever? Did you stumble on your words? Did you not know what to say? How long does it take to get their attention? And are you awkward? Find those problems and fix them. That will give you the experiences you need.
The hardest part about the job is just trying to talk to new people and trying to get on their good side very quickly and so if you can practice that and just get comfortable where you're not nervous talking to people that will make you significantly better.
What I would recommend for getting started is just train. Just train. You have to memorize the words over and over and over again. Even if it sounds scripted for the first while, just train and memorize the words and then you'll get to being natural on the doors.
