Extreme weather - Uruguay Video Transcripts
Video 1 Transcript
So the weather in Uruguay can be kind of interesting. It goes from really sunny and really hot to rainy really quickly, and it's always humid there, but it's not too bad. You'll get used to it and you'll really feel the people helping you. They are always willing to give you water when it's a super hot day, but it's interesting because sometimes you can feel that the rain is coming just from the humidity and the way the air feels. One time we were just out in the street and it was a perfectly fine day. We didn't have coats, we didn't have umbrellas or anything, and the next thing we know we're just getting dumped on. But the people are usually pretty nice and they'll let you in, they'll give you blankets and towels and help you out a little bit. But there's nothing super weird, just you got to be ready for the rain. Always be ready for the rain.

In Uruguay, you're going to have to deal with horizontal rain, like, it just comes at you from the side. It's very impressive, and there's not really, you're going to get soaked, there's not really a way to avoid it. Oh, it's so humid, it is so humid down there. I think for the entire month of January, I was just sweating, also, you know, the seasons are reversed, southern hemisphere and everything, but yeah, so it's hot, it's humid, and it gets like bone-chillingly cold in the winter. It never snows, but you're going to be experiencing some pretty extreme temperatures, so be prepared for that.

So, Uruguay can get really, really hot and it can be pretty cold, which is kind of unexpected considering you're like, it's South America, it's going to be hot, but in the winters it's pretty humid. Probably the craziest weather is the rainstorms. There were a couple times where I got caught in a rainstorm when we were outside, we couldn't get inside anywhere, and even just within a few seconds we were like soaked through completely. There was one time I was headed to a bus station with my companion and by the time we got there it was literally maybe like a minute and a half walking in the rain and we even had, I think, coats on, but by the time we got to the station we were soaked all the way through and then we had a three-hour bus ride after that, of course.

It can rain so hard. Streets would turn into rivers or a pond and we just have to walk through. Sometimes it was so deep it would go into our boots, our rain boots. Sometimes it'll rain for a full week and not stop. Another important thing to know is that there is a hole in the ozone layer over Uruguay, which means the sun is so strong. Literally one day we were outside for half an hour and I forgot to put sunscreen on right here and I was burnt to a crisp. So if you are sensitive to the sun and even if you're not, know that you're gonna get sunburned and sunscreen is a must.

Oh my goodness, the rain in the wintertime can get insane. Like, I had boots, like, almost up to my knees. They were quite high and sometimes the rain would pool in the streets and it would fill up my boots because the water was up to my knees. They have awesome lightning. The sky is so big and beautiful.

Just realize that there's kind of extremes in Uruguay, so it can be super hot and humid in the summers to the point that you just feel like you're sweating buckets every day. To the other extreme of it being just so cold and humid. So just realize that you should bring lots of layers. The other crazy thing about Uruguay weather is just the rain. There is so much rain there and it's heavy rain and rains for long periods. So yeah, I was not expecting that but you just got to make the best of it and have fun with it because sometimes there are torrential downpours and it makes everything green and beautiful so works out in the end.

One thing I love about Uruguay is I feel like the sky is just so big and the sunsets are amazing, they're incredible, but they also have a lot of cool summer storms with a lot of, just a lot of lightning, which is pretty impressive. And sometimes, depending on where you are, the streets totally flood and I had some good boots that almost went up to my knee and, well, my whole foot would be soaked. But the rain was crazy sometimes, but beautiful and lightning's exciting.
