They serve asado, which is basically, it means roast. They just cook pig or lamb or something like that and they cook it over like coals and it's super delicious. They usually have it on holidays like Christmas or their independence day or something like that. They also have chorizo, which is not like the spicy chorizo that we know here. It's more like a big sausage, super yummy. They have these things called milanesas, which is essentially like breaded meats. They make them out of all kinds of different meat. They do them out of chicken, pork, beef, super yummy. And other than that, not terribly delicious, but they put rice, well they put mayo on their rice, mayonnaise. Just a cultural thing. I actually really like it, surprisingly.

All the food in Uruguay is really good. I have almost no complaints. The pastries are definitely the best part. There's these little cookies, they're called alfajores, and it's like these shortbread cookies filled with dulce de leche. You can find a lot of them like covered in chocolate, a lot of them are rolled in coconut, like dried coconut. They're so good. There's also a lot of other little pastries like biscoches, things like that. It's just delicious. And dulce de leche by itself, like sometimes I would just like dip bananas in it. It was really good. And then as far as savory food, there's a sandwich called chibito, and it's like a Uruguayan special. And it's just like a steak sandwich essentially, but it has a lot of really good stuff on it. So you have that to look forward to for sure.

Okay, there is this one dessert. It was so good. It's called pasta frola and it's basically like this tart, like a dessert tart. You have like your, your crust is really thick and they either put dulce de leche, which is like a caramelized milk topping that they put on top or membrillo, which is a fruit they have, and they like make dulce de, okay, like a sweet jam syrup out of it and they put that on and then they put like these lattice pattern things with the crust and then they sprinkle coconut on top. Always got that when I was having a hard day.

So one of the best foods that they have there is called asado, which is basically barbecue, but Uruguayan style. And so it's super good. They cook it over an open fire, so it's got a really good smoke flavor. And also they eat milanesas de pollo, which are like chicken patties that they deep fry. And it's really good. Surprisingly, you'll eat a lot of that. It's kind of a traditional food. But it's really good. And it fills you up. Another thing they like to drink actually is called mate, which is a super traditional drink there. And I would advise you to try it. It's not the best thing at first, but you'll get used to it. And I actually love it. And the Uruguayans love talking about it. So once you learn to adapt to that part of their culture, drinking mate, you'll really learn to gain their trust.

I do love like bread and sweets and stuff and pastries so they have a lot of pastries that are similar to like Argentine pastries but they're called bizcochos. I think in Argentina they call them facturas but in Uruguay they're called bizcochos and they're just like little pastries kind of like and they fill them with like dulce de leche and those are really good. They also have these like round cookies kind of that they put dulce de leche in between like two sandwich cookies and sometimes they dip them in chocolate or something. Those are called alfajores. Those are good. I love sweets. A common food that I enjoyed it's very like simple it's just basically spaghetti but they call it fideos con tuco and I enjoyed fideos con tuco. It's a little different but those were some of my favorite foods.

Melanesas are definitely the best. I think chicken melanesas are the best, which if you don't know, it's kind of kind of like flattened fried chicken, but like breaded. I don't know exactly how to explain it, but it's really good. And then the funny thing is, they put mayonnaise on it. They put mayonnaise on everything there. It's one of the only condiments that they use, which weirded me out a little bit at first. And I was like, I'm never going to do that. But their mayonnaise is actually way better than mayonnaise in the States. And it actually does go pretty well on melanesas.

My favorite food in Uruguay was called a milanesa. It's either made out of chicken, fish, or beef, but it's basically, we called it the flat chicken nuggets. So they would just like flatten the meat out and then bread it and fry it. And then you eat it with a little bit of lemon on it or some mayo.

Video 8 - Transcription

Okay, so they have some good food carts actually, um Let's see ponchos are like their hot dogs, but they're actually really good. They have like all these um good toppings, but what I really liked were the Chivitos, that's what they are chivitos. There was a little stand in my area in san fernando and they were so good like they're just kind of like a hamburger more or less but like the like meat is like they like Hit it with a hammer. I don't know how to describe it

There is so much meat in Uruguay and it's delicious. I'm not a meat eater, but I absolutely loved the meat there, so look forward to that. Aside from that, I really loved arroz con leche. It's basically like a rice pudding. A lot of times they eat it with this caramel stuff called dulce de leche and it is just heavenly and so good. I also just loved a food called milanesa and it's basically like hammered out chicken. It's very flat and then they fry it and often eat it with rice or like a potato side solid. That is super delicious and then make sure to get bread in Uruguay because that is surprisingly good as well and just look forward to the food. It's amazing and just so delicious.

Milanesa de pollo is breaded fried meat and you can have it with chicken or beef or pork. I had it with eggplant one time or fish and then they serve you just like lettuce and sometimes they'll like drizzle oil on it. Tomatoes that are chopped up and then they also give you rice that I do not know how they make rice there it is so good and they add like hard-boiled eggs that are chopped up or a little piece of carrot cooked carrot or corn and then of course you have your lemon tinted mayonnaise that they love to just put over the whole thing. There's also a food called canelones which is basically like meat crepes and they just fill it normally with like ground beef I think there's like some onions in it and a little bit of cheese and they like roll them up and they'll put this white sauce over it and then a red sauce so good
