Some of the coolest things about the culture in McAllen is how everyone is super focused on like their family and God, which is super cool. It's like a very Christian and Catholic background. So everyone, that's super cool. Everyone's like pretty much like super open to talk about God. The hard thing is that they don't have their beliefs and you're trying to like help them in that type of sense. Food's amazing. It's all like, it's all just like a amazing Mexicans. Um, that's like most of who's living there. They're super laid back, love to have a good time. Hard to get them to church, but super fun.
Be prepared for every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night, especially spring, summer, and fall. Everyone is just gonna be out in the front or backyard with all of their family making a carne, having a barbecue, all this food. Everywhere you go, you're just gonna be hearing like, epic Mexican banda, norteña music, because they have crazy massive speakers. And a lot of them are gonna offer you food and it's gonna be awesome. So definitely eat it up, it's so fun. Don't waste all your time doing it though, because a lot of the time you try and talk to them and they're just like drunk and they're just not there. But it's so cool, it's so fun.
The people are so good and so fun. They also are like so chill. And what we would say in the mission, like flojo, which would just mean like loose or in like the most of the context that we're talking about it, like lazy. Where just super like slow to commit to anything. Like you would talk to anyone and they're like, oh yeah, like I'll go to church for sure. And then they don't come and you're like, oh my gosh, like, why'd you come? He's like, oh, like, I don't know. Like, you know, like maybe next time. So they, there are a lot of people who were, they seemed like pretty like lazy or like unmotivated to like get up and like do stuff. So being aware of that can help and like finding people who really do want to come on to God and act in faith. And also this is fun to like kind of act like that, get along with them, make friends for sure.
So in McAllen, the people speak what we call Tex-Mex, where a lot of them will have lived there for like 20 years and barely know any English. But they'll know like, pretty much everyone will know their numbers. So like you ask for their phone number and you like, they'll tell it to you in English, even if they don't know any English. And then a good chunk of people will know both. And when they're talking to people that also know like both languages, they'll just like mix in words and phrases from each into this kind of terrifying, but also beautiful combination of like both languages. And it's like the coolest thing ever. Tex-Mex. I like Spanglish, but super fun. So definitely learn how to do that. Do it with your comps. Do it with the people. And they'll love you for it. Such a good tip. I highly recommend it.
