Switzerland is what's known as a confederation. In 1291, the three cantons or counties in central Switzerland, including Schwyz, where the name of the country came from, decided to join together to not be absorbed by the Holy Roman Empire and other surrounding powers. And ever since then, different cantons have joined the Swiss confederation, and now there are 26 of them. And yes, it is one country, but each canton has a high amount of autonomy, somewhat similar to in the United States with the federal system. And it's really cool to see.
