Common misconceptions - Podcaster Video Transcripts

A common misconception that I've heard spoken about is being able to make money doing podcasting. There is a way to do it. There is a way to monetize your podcast. It does take a lot of research. It does take a lot of hard work. I thought doing this, it'll be boom. I get on the microphone. I upload it. No problem. I'll make, you know, not tons of money, but at least make money. So there's a common misconception that you can make, you know, you're going to do this and you're going to make a decent living. You can, but it's going to take hard work.

First one is that you need a lot of awesome equipment and that's just not the case. You could do this with a simple phone, you know, your smartphone. I've heard people that have awful quality equipment but I love their podcast because of the content they talk about and it's so intriguing or the subject. So you just got to jump in. The other misconception is that people will actually listen to your podcast in the first 50 or so. The reality is is that nobody really hears your first 50, 60, 70 episodes. I mean, maybe your mom does but at the end of the day you just got to put content out there and once you get momentum, I remember I didn't get momentum until about 70, 80 episodes and some people went back but most people don't. And so just start producing content and you'll figure it out and it'll be great.

The misconception I hear a lot of is that you really have to be an expert. You have to be, you know, this big name or something to get started on your podcast. And that's not true at all. You can just start talking about something you're really passionate about. And I mean, there's people that I followed, and that I've listened to on their podcasts, just because of their passion, just because of the enthusiasm that they have. I love listening to them. And honestly, sometimes I even just love listening to some people's voices, the quality of the sound and the voice. It's like, it's almost comforting, right? So, and you don't have to have a perfect voice to be a podcaster either. But, you know, those are some things that I think some people think I got to have the perfect setup. And I have to be an expert, but you don't, you can just do it with your phone. And you can just, you know, start talking about something that you love and you're passionate about.

I think the biggest misconception is that starting a podcast is difficult or you have to have expensive equipment. You don't. If you would like to gain a listenership, it's going to benefit you to have a good microphone and good audio. So that might be something you want to invest in. But honestly, you don't have to have a lot of expensive equipment. It's not difficult. For instance, I do my podcast out of my garage with a $100 microphone and my laptop. That's all you need. So you don't need a lot of equipment. Another common misconception might be that it's difficult to get your podcast approved. It's really not. It's a simple process. Anybody can have this platform. I think just really the biggest thing is that it's not hard and you don't need a lot of stuff to do it.
