I think one of the biggest misconceptions in my area which is family medicine is that family medicine is just a referral center and that people just come to us to get a referral to somewhere else so that they can be treated for whatever condition they have. Family medicine treats a large variety of illnesses and diseases, depression, anxiety, ADD, bipolar, heart failure, diabetes, asthma, COPD, a lot of things. And so sometimes there are definitely times that referral is needed if there is something outside of the scope of the family medicine physician. But I've had several patients who want a referral for things that I was able to manage but they did not know that because they didn't think that family medicine is able to do so many, is able to do as much as we do. We do cradle to grave, so from baby all the way until somebody passes and we are trained in a lot of areas.
