Advice for getting started - Physician Video Transcripts

If you're thinking about exploring a career in medicine, I would recommend that you first of all work hard in school, try to get involved with a lot of different extracurricular activities, and then try to seek opportunities to volunteer in the medical environment, whether it's in the hospital or a clinic, or even reach out to your family physician or someone that you know to see if you can shadow them and learn more about what it means to be a physician. You really have to be committed to doing it to make it through all of the schooling and training.

If you are interested in the medical field, I would first start by talking with individuals who are already in the medical field and asking how they are liking it. Before going into medical school or even before applying to medical school, I spoke with several individuals and whether or not they would do it again and many of them said they would. So that was a good indicator that they liked what they were doing and also volunteering and getting yourself exposed before committing yourself to know whether or not this is something that you want to do. It is a long road, a minimum of 11 years, four years of undergrad, then four years of medical school, and then at least three years of residency. So when you start it, it is a commitment. Well worth it on my end. I enjoy what I do, but getting involved and in the medical field before committing yourself and getting an idea of what it is, is what I would really recommend to see if it's what you really want to do.

It helps to make sure you're going into medical school, residency, and all that for the right reason. You need to make sure you enjoy the idea of health care and make sure not to do it for money and have the mindset that if this is calling your name that it'll be worth the time and money investment.
