Holidays - Israel Video Transcripts

I don't know why I was expecting Christmas in Israel, kind of silly, but if you're going to be in Israel over Christmas, just expect that it's like any other day. Me and my sister were in Israel through Christmas and there are no lights. We had to go on the Palestinian side to find a Christmas tree and it was just really tiny, so finding anything Christmas related is hard. We actually found a couple with a Santa hat on and we were like, Merry Christmas, because nobody else really celebrated it. You can't really say Merry Christmas to people, it's not something they celebrate there, so keep that in mind.

There are a couple of holidays, like four or five, that everyone is on the street. Usually everything is closed and the malls are closed or the shop centers, but people are celebrating, going to parties in Tel Aviv or in Jerusalem. You can also go to parties and restaurants are also open, but the shop centers are closed. This is an experience, I guess, to go to a house of religious people to see how they live.

I was in Israel during the Muslim month of Ramadan, and so it was really a really neat experience, and since I was at the Jerusalem Center at BYU, we couldn't go out at night, but basically during the day they're all fasting, but then at night they break their fast and they kind of have like a little party every night, and I wish we could have gone and seen that because I hear, I heard that it's just incredible to be in the city during Ramadan at night, but it's still really cool to see how people are so willing to fast and to see their devotion to God. It was a really neat experience, and I would, if you can go during Ramadan, I say why not? It's really neat.
