I had a sarcoma between the spinal cord and the spinal column at the top of my neck and if they'd used regular radiation it would have gone through and fried the spinal cord and left me paralyzed from the neck down. Thanks to proton beam therapy and Mass General they were able to go in, hit the tumor, burn the tumor out and then it exits. I spent the summer in Mass General at their Burr Therapy Center and Dr. Leibsch was fantastic. It saved my life and you go in, they set you down, you're kind of fastened to the table and the entire room moves. It's like something out of Star Trek or Star Wars. The whole room turns while your machine lines up and it zaps the tumor. It's a fantastic program and there aren't the side effects of normal radiation.
