Why bad things happen to good people - English Video Transcripts

So in the Book of Mormon, in 2 Nephi chapter 2 verse 11, it says that there must needs be an opposition in all things. There needs to be good for there to be bad. And so it sucks that bad things happen to good people, but it's a requirement. If we didn't know what good was, we also wouldn't know what bad was and vice versa. So sometimes we have to go through really, really difficult things so that we can understand that really, really good things are fantastic. And the gospel of Jesus Christ is so good and makes us happy, and it helps us get through those difficult times, those things that suck a lot.

Why do bad things happen to good people? One of the reasons we think is behind it is that when bad things happen to good people, suddenly people know how to emphasize how to feel more like the people who have bad things happen because of their own choices. They realize how to actually get through these struggles, how to help others. Bad things happen because the choices of others affect ourselves. There's some of the sins that just affect everybody involved, which is really a shame, but it teaches us a lesson that agency is not just a personal thing. It is affecting everybody else, that it's important to make choices not because we care about ourselves, but because we care about the people around us and people we love.

So I really sympathize with people who see a lot of evil in the world and just wonder how there could be an all-powerful and all-loving God. I think for me what's helped to understand the answer to this question why bad things happen to good people is just looking at it through the context of the plan of salvation. The fact that we came to this earth to be tried and tested and will receive a reward based on how we choose to use our agency. And I think about, could you imagine if good things only happen to good people and bad things only happen to bad people? It would totally interfere with God's plan. So he wants to preserve our free will and our agency by letting us have bad things happen to us and other people.

Bad things happen to good people because bad things happen to everyone. And because I believe that God loves us too much to let us stay as we are. And he uses difficult circumstances to teach us to become better. He gives us mountains to climb because there's wisdom in, you know, making us into stronger and more empathetic people. He wants us to be better and more like his son. And Jesus Christ went through, you know, the hardest trials and hardest, you know, he suffered all of our sins, which gave him perfect empathy. So I think that bad things happen to good people because bad things happen to everyone. And that's just a part of life. It's how we react and how we respond to those difficulties.

You know what? I don't know why bad things happen to good people. Here is what I think. I don't know why, but I think it's part of God's plan. I think that He wants us to learn how to develop faith, how to rely on Him, and ultimately, when we do those things, when we have faith, when we pray, when we rely on Heavenly Father, He blesses us. Sometimes it's only through those difficult circumstances that we can learn the lessons that we personally need to learn. I know that doesn't necessarily bring anyone consolation or peace, but when we overcome our trials and go through hard things, we come out stronger in the end, and that is for our benefit.

All right, so the reason that I think bad things happen to good people is because, not because God wants us to go through bad things or hard things, but because he wants us to learn from them and because he has an ultimate plan. And this plan, we don't know the outcomes of everything that happens, but God has a bigger plan and each thing that happens to us happens to us for a reason. And so from these things that God puts in our lives, whether they be hard things or easy things or good things or bad things, he wants us to learn from them, to grow from them. And those hard things allow us to come unto him and he wants us to come to him and to pray to him. And that is why bad things happen to good people, because everyone has bad things happen to them, but those challenges are given for a reason.

So I think this question is a question that each of us ask at one point in our lives because life is hard and we want to know the why. But something that has really helped me and the perspective I try to remember is that we live in this imperfect world and sometimes things just happen because of that and it's not necessarily God punishing us or because we're a bad person but sometimes we just get trials or hardships just because life is imperfect and there's challenges that come with mortality. But I think that the beauty of Christianity is that we know that God and Jesus Christ, they are there for us and they have designed a plan and a gospel that helps us through those challenges through life. And so that's something that's comforting for me.

For me, bad things happen to good people because we label them as bad. You label a death, a failure, a disappointment, then you'll all see them as bad. But I personally believe in having an eternal perspective and whatever may happen is something that's supposed to be for the benefit of myself or someone I'm to meet and help.

Bad things happen to good people because we are all human and we all have trials that we need to go through which ultimately strength makes us stronger. If good people were awarded with no trials, good people would likely not be strong. I don't think that's how Heavenly Father works. He's a very fair and just God and everybody exhibits trials in their life they need to go through and I think that I can attest that for me with the trials that I've gone through I've come out stronger in the end and I think everybody almost everybody that I've heard has said the same thing whenever they go through trial so I think that everybody experiences them because it is something that is needed for us to grow and to feel different things and we wouldn't know what the feeling of joy is if we didn't know what the feeling of sorrow is and vice versa so I think that feeling those different emotions give us experience in life and help us grow towards making it back to Heavenly Father.

So I remember serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and one of the first people I talked to while serving asked me this question, why bad things happen to good people. And this question really stuck to me, because I feel like I'd heard of the question a lot, but I never really actually had an answer to it. And so I was determined to find an answer. And so one day, as I was saying the scriptures, I realized the reason bad things happen to good people is so we can learn how to use the atonement of Jesus Christ and apply it into our lives. And ever since then, I've just stuck with that thought. And I've realized that bad things happen to me so that I can have opportunities to come closer to Christ and use his loving grace and mercy that he gives to us all the time.

Bad things happen to everyone. God is fair to everyone. He lets everyone have good days and bad days. I don't think it would be fair to just let bad things happen to just bad people. Also, it's not like we're being punished because we're being good. We're being tested and tried. And if we endure that trial, those trials and temptations and tribulations, the test will be rewarded.

The answer is simple. Bad things happen to good people. This life, this life is a fallen state. Why are we expecting this life to be easy for us who deem ourselves as good? Let's remember, if the Savior, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten of the Father, did not have an easy life, not fair, that's not always rewarding, not always perfect, and were to pick up his cross and follow him, what's the point of expecting this life to be easy and fair and good? The best life ever in this world didn't have a good life all the time. We need to learn that ours is not going to be as good either.

I believe it's because Heavenly Father has to allow those things to happen to everybody because of the world we live in. It's not ever that He chooses those things to happen to anybody. I believe He loves everybody, so He doesn't want bad things to happen to anyone, but He allows that to happen because He has to, because of the world that we live in. That's why He provided the Savior, Jesus Christ, to allow us to get past those hard times.

Someone in a video before mine said that bad things happen to everyone, and that's really true. You can't single yourself out and say you're the only one that bad things have ever happened to. It's kind of like a downer, but it's also sort of comforting, because it really is all about how you handle the situation. God wants us to grow. We're not going to grow if everything is easy. If you always carried a baby around, they would never learn to walk. It's the same with us. You can't do everything for somebody, and that means that things will be hard. And that doesn't mean that... I mean, I'm definitely not perfect at handling everything, but I try. That's all Heavenly Father expects us to do, is to try and to grow. And he'll help us. He always will.

I have thought about this question a lot, but why do all these horrible things happen to really good people and people that have no choice, no ability to change the bad that's happening to them? And I think it's been a trial of my faith and I've had to exercise faith in my beliefs and in a God that in the end all will be made right and that those who have been wronged will be blessed and that there will be justice and there will be mercy. And it is something that's hard to think about though, that there are these bad things happening to good people and how could God let that happen? But again, for me, it just comes down to the fact that I have faith in a Heavenly Father that loves us and is aware of us and that He is going to make it all right in the end.

The best examples are going to be the ones you see in scriptures. It's not the easiest to think of because, you know, throughout our normal day right now, we just see the people that we know personally. But Christ, you know, if you believe in Jesus Christ, you believe he was perfect and did nothing wrong. And even though he did nothing wrong, he experienced the greatest pain of all time when performing the atonement, greater than anything that we could ever even imagine. We have literally no clue how painful that was. He experienced that, and he was whipped and killed. And so literally the best person on earth went through the absolute worst pain of all time and was killed. Prophets were killed. People that were very great people in the scriptures were killed. And we see that in today's world too. Just because you're doing something right doesn't mean you're not going to go through trials. A trial is a time to see if we will keep doing what's right.

First off, I want to say to whoever is watching this that you'll be able to get through whatever it is you're struggling with. But the Lord gives us a beautiful reason, one of probably many, why we have trials in this life and why bad things happen to specifically good people. In the Book of Mormon, Mormon tells us, he says, And thus we see that except the Lord doth chasten his people with many afflictions. Yea, except he doth visit them with death and with terror and with famine and with all manner of pestilence, they will not remember him. So one reason why we are given so many hardships is because it's the Lord helping us to turn and look to him and seek for his help. That's in Helaman 12.3, by the way.

My understanding of why bad things happen to good people is kind of like how a sailor doesn't learn how to be a sailor if they only have smooth seas. Sometimes the biggest trials in our lives can bring us the biggest blessings and they can strengthen us and help us grow in a way that nothing else could have and so I've often found that the things that I thought were the hardest actually when I got through them with the help of Christ that they were the biggest blessings in my life.

I can't honestly say that I know 100% why God lets bad things happen to good people, but I do know that after my trials, once I've come past them, it seems to me that it's been about growth and learning how to overcome things, and I think it's hard to hear that when you're in the middle of a trial or in the middle of something that's really challenging. But I've also heard that it's that God trusts you enough to, He wants to see you grow, and it's, He thinks that it's time for you to grow, and I think that sometimes you can come out of a bad situation and you've learned a lot of things and you have more knowledge to help other people and to help your life.

This is probably my biggest question in life is why do bad things happen to good people? And for me, I know that the times I have grown the most are the times I've been stretched and tried the most. So I know that there is nothing that we can't get through. And I love the expression that everything works out in the end. If it doesn't work out, if it hasn't worked out, it isn't the end. And I know that God wouldn't give us anything that we can't handle. I just wish sometimes he wouldn't trust me so much. I know that through adversities and trials, we grow, we learn, and then hopefully I'm able to help other people who then are in the similar situation. So I've dealt with infertility, I've dealt with children having big traumas, and then I've been able to help those around me when they've struggled with similar issues.

What's worked for me is to remember what the Lord's purpose is. His goal is to help us become more, to help us grow, to be better and stronger than we've ever been before. And challenges and hardships are the best way to purify us. And so when I am thinking I'm doing everything that I need to be doing, and things are going well, and then something bad happens, I try to remember that this isn't God punishing me, this isn't Him trying to make my life terrible. He's trying to help me grow. And He's trying to help me become stronger. And this is a chance for me to prove myself and become more than I've ever been, more than I've ever been before, to become something greater than I've ever been before. What a great honor that is that the Lord would trust us with that.

So I think that a lot of people have this question of why good things or why bad things happen to good people and You Want to blame God for it and say well, you know, he knew that this is gonna happen So why is he allowing this to happen? Why does he allow? Children to get cancer. Why this why that we live in a world where first of all, we have free will So if there's someone out here murdering someone else serial killers We have the free will to do whatever we want and we forget that Satan walks among us every single day it's not just God allows this to happen because we have free will and Unfortunately sickness is also a part of that and bad things and trials are going to come But we know that we have God to lean on During these trials and the Bible makes sure that we know that

I think bad things happen in our life for one of three reasons. Sometimes we make a bad decision. So if I decide to go rob a bank and I end up in jail, then I'm in jail because I made a bad decision. Sometimes bad things happen in our life because of decisions of other people. If my sister punches me in the face and my face now hurts, that's because my sister made a decision that impacted me. And I think sometimes the third reason that bad things happen is we just live in a fallen world. We live in a world where tornadoes happen. So sometimes the tornado knocks down your house, not because God was trying to teach you a lesson, but just because we live in a world of tornadoes. And I think that it's never, it's not always that you are doing something wrong, that bad things happen. And that's why we have Jesus. Jesus lets us know that everything that was ever wronged will be made right. Everything, every injustice that's ever happened will be made right. And we can just trust in his abilities to overcome the inequalities and unfairness of life.

You know, this is a really tough one, and you know, I know the people that have the hardest time with this are people who have had some really extremely difficult things happen to them, you know, and I've had some of that, but I know other people have had way, way harder things, you know, so this is a really sensitive subject for a lot of people. But I think the reason why people, you know, get all up in arms about bad things happening to good people is because, you know, we talk about how God loves us, and it seems like, well, if God loves us, it seems like he'd protect us, but in reality, it's more of a long-term thing, you know, he's not here to just make us comfortable all the time, and that's one of those things that just sounds like a platitude, but it is just so true, you know, he really puts us through some really, really rough things, you know, and when you're going through them, there's, you know, like, I almost don't know what to say, it's just incredibly difficult, but just know that afterwards there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, and always good things to make up for it.

Sometimes, you know, we question the Lord, saying why we had to go through a lot of hardships and trials in life. However, I would say that, you know, the Lord knows that the people that can handle certain situations in life, that's why he gives those people those challenges. And they're not bad things, they're actually blessings, because those blessings at the end, if you be able to endure those challenges, at the end of the road, you'll be able to receive blessings that you didn't even think you're going to get, because the Lord is aware of our trials and our challenges that we're going through in this life.

Things that are uncomfortable in life are called bad things. Stuff that makes us, that causes us to be sad, to feel lonely, to feel lost. Yes, those are hard and difficult things, but we each have the potential to overcome them and become a stronger person from them. And so they don't have to be bad things. Though they may be terrible in the moment, if it be the death of a loved one or you lose your job and you can't support your family or anything like that. Yes, they're difficult, but if we put our faith in Him, our Savior, Jesus Christ, we can overcome them and we can be stronger because of Him. And so that's why those bad things, I don't think that those bad things are actually bad.
