Culture tips
Watch Videosthey have a lot of interesting dining table things that they do. one is, if you put your fork and your knife close to each other, it means you're done. if you put them far away, it means you're still eating. so just be mindful of that. it's not the biggest thing, but it's good to kind of let people know. another thing is, when they clear the table, they always put all the excess food and stuff on one plate and then stack that on top of all the other plates to clear it. so if you want to look like you know what you're doing, just offer to help clean up and then do that and they'll love it.
don't tell people their food was quite good. in america and you know other places it means that it that it was really good that you really enjoyed it but in england that has a lot more of like a rude connotation like you're like you're surprised it's good like you didn't expect it to be good
So my sister, while she was there, she realized how popular football is. So you have to pronounce it football, not soccer. For some reason, it's the way they say it. So, if you like soccer, and if you're good at soccer, you're going to be loved. It's a great way to start a conversation.
The culture of English people, love them, but it took me a long time to love them to be honest. They can seem kind of cold and very separated from everyone else. They just have a mission and they're going. They don't let them be stopped, but once you get over that wall, once you break through their barriers, they're so lovely. They will do anything for you and that barrier, I found, could be broken by humor. They're super sarcastic, most of them, so you can just be brave, jump right in, be familiar, be happy, be yourself. Try not to become them. Be your own unique person and they'll acknowledge you for that, but also try not to bring too much of your American side and try and fight them with that. They don't like that either, but I love English people. They're the best.
The English people, um, they are very standoffish at first, um, you just have to really crack the shuttle. Just like one thing you say can, can get in, um, and then they'll just totally open up to you and they'll be super nice. Um, but yeah, you can't get easily offended because that's the way they are. They're very blunt people. Um, they'll tell you what they like and don't like about you. Um, and they're not trying to be mean. That's just how they are.
With the English people and the Scottish, Irish, Welsh, they just love to tease. The humor is really harsh over there, so don't get mad or offended if they're teasing you. They're just, as they say, taking the mick out of you. They're just teasing. So just know they love to tease. They have so much love. They just show in different ways. So just know, even though they might be teasing you, they still love you. Because it's so diverse, just be loving and accepting of everyone's backgrounds and stories and religious beliefs. We talk to a lot of people from Africa or people from the Middle East. They had just very, very different views on religion or just on anything. And so they could be very sensitive, but also just be super accepting. If people do stuff that's kind of different or kind of odd, don't make fun of them. Just be loving.
One thing that English people do not like is when you approach them or you shake their hands. They don't like when you give like the fishy hand. So give them a good handshake. This is what they want and this is what they like. Especially with elderly people, I mean you don't have to you know grab it too hard, but especially elderly people they don't like it when you give them like a fishy hand. I experienced that a lot and since that I always give a good handshake. So this is what they like and eat their food. So if they invite you or they say hey I will give you some food or here you can take with you, then just take it because it's kind of rude if you don't take it.
People here are not very opened up for strangers and you have to really get to know them to be their really friends or to be accepted and the culture itself I would say the more colder but once you get to know them they're just different and probably for England you have so many multicultural people in here so when we just talk about English people then yes but when we talk about many other kind of other countries people so you get a different culture experiences every time you meet different people on the street.
Don't give people the backwards peace sign. I'll do it forwards, but if you do this backwards then, you know, like with the back of your hand facing them, then it's really offensive. So make sure not to throw up a peace sign too much.
