If you are walking and you think that someone's following you, cross the street, and if they cross the street then you know they're following you. So try and find people around you, a group of people, a couple of people, and walk up to them and be like, hey do you mind if we walk with you for a little bit, this person's following us. Or go into the nearest store that you can and let them know what's going on so that they make sure that you're safe as well. And if you notice that someone's following you and you don't have those options, and then you notice someone is coming towards you, they're most likely both going to try and rob you. So cross the street and get out of there as soon as you can. The dogs are pretty wild in Ecuador. A lot of them either have rabies or they're just like stressed out angry dogs. You're going to see a dog try to attack you when you're encountering that. You can always bend down and act like you're reaching for a rock and usually that'll scare them enough to run away.

Just be aware of your surroundings, notice how people are looking at you, and notice if people are following you. Always look around and look out for your companion as well. Pickpocketing is really big there, and so if you're on a bus have your bag in front of you and hold on to it. I even doing that I had someone try and pickpocket me, and I was like, hey, what are you doing? You like kind of want to make a scene about it because the people around you will always support you. Like everyone's out to get the thieves. If you're getting money out of an ATM, take your money out and immediately put it in your wallet and put it in your backpack deep down in somewhere where it's like, don't put it on an outside pocket where someone can just steal it easily. Make sure it's safe and secure and never go through your money in public. People will always notice and you'll become a target. Never carry a ton of money on you and it's better to have the bills like stacked separately in your pocket or whatever so you can just take one out at a time and not have to shuffle through all of your bills. So then it doesn't look like you have a ton of money.

My number one travel tip for Ecuador is to utilize the buses. They're super well laid out. There are buses that stop almost everywhere and you can get from any city to any city, from any part of the city to another part of the city. It is super well laid out. In Quito, the capital, there is a big massive bus station called Quitumbe. You can go from anywhere you want, even if it's the airport, you can get yourself to Quitumbe through a bus or through the trolley. At Quitumbe, you can get yourself anywhere in Ecuador and even to the borders of Colombia or to Peru. You can take your bus wherever you'd like and it's super easy and super, super, super cheap. I would recommend, don't forget that name, Quitumbe.
