A fun thing about Ecuador is they celebrate a holiday called Carnival and it's this week before the 40 like Ash Wednesday and and it's supposed to be you know the getting all of those like sins and all of that craziness out of you before you fast and you give up something before Easter. Anyways it's ends up it ended up now kind of just being this cultural activity where people throw colors at people and foam and flour and water so you will just be walking down the street and because it's the week of Carnival you'll get water just like thrown at you from a car and then you'll get like crayon or you know that chalk dust like thrown at you and you'll be like black and purple and blue and red. It is super fun though if you are into that sort of stuff it's a party.

So it's very fun to be in Ecuador during the holidays because they do like to have a party and they have some very interesting holidays that we don't have in the U.S. that are really fun to do. Especially they have a tradition for New Years where they have this like life-size doll that they make and some people go all out. They make like huge papier-mâché life-like looking things that are absolutely beautifully made but pretty much everyone participates and they have some kind of life-size doll thing and on the eve of the new year they burn it and it represents the old year and so they're burning all the bad things that happened in the old year and they have a lot of fun with that. There's a whole bunch of bonfires in the street and it's so much fun and it's a tradition that has a beautiful meaning and it's a good time to participate in it too.

So in Ecuador there are two super fun traditions that they have for New Year's Eve. The first one they call it año viejo or old year or basically they will be selling these like paper machine dolls out on the streets and they could be like actual people like we had one that was an iron man or just like random things and then like sometimes like you'll write stuff on it or put stuff in it and then for on New Year's Eve you burn it to kind of let go of everything in the past to start over for the next year which is super fun. I mean you have a member burn it for you at midnight but another thing is they call it las viudas so basically it's where a bunch of straight guys dress up like women because they are acting as the wives of those dolls that you burn and they dance in the streets, twerk on cars to try to ask for money and it's super funny.
