Extreme weather - Ecuador Video Transcripts
Video 1 Transcript
There are four regions in Ecuador. The coast side is going to be really hot, especially from the months of November until May. So use fresh clothing. Then you have the highlands, Sierra, which is pretty much like you are in spring, every time in spring, but it could get crazier because it could rain and then be kind of like a little hot. And of course you have the Amazon region, which is really humid and hot. So be prepared for that. And of course Galapagos season, which have two seasons, the winter and the summer, but the winter is not as bad as you think, but it's going to be a really, really windy season. So pretty much be prepared, be fresh. That's what I can recommend you.

So the weather in Ecuador is kind of crazy. It depends where you are, of course. In the mountains, it rains a lot and it rains hard, but the good thing about being in the mountains is all of the rain runs downhill and so you don't get any flooding. But if you're in the coast, it's all flat and so they get a lot of like flooding in the coast and you'll go out into the streets and just the water will be up to your knees and you just got to walk through the water. So that's always really fun. In the coast it's always warm, of course. In the mountains, it does kind of get cold. You'll definitely want to have a jacket with you. It's kind of like fall-spring weather in America. So you will be cold sometimes, but in the coast it gets pretty hot and you're definitely going to have a fan with you in your home and you're going to be sweating all day. So it depends on where you are. They don't really have seasons in Ecuador, but they do have their rainy season and their not rainy season, so you're going to want to be prepared for getting wet.

When you're near the coast it'll be around six months of pure hot humid sun and then another six months of also hot humidity but mixed with heavy downpours of rain and lots of it. The sewage or I mean I guess the water drainage system is not very good in most parts of Ecuador so as soon as it starts raining the roads will start flooding. You can be walking around with water up or above your knees a lot of times during those six months.

You're using sunscreen even like if you don't think it's that hot or even if you don't think the Sun is that strong or if it's like cloudy in the morning because there the weather changes all the time. Like you might wake up and it might be cloudy and then later in the day the Sun will be really strong and it will burn your skin even if you don't get that sunburn here in the U.S. because you're like right on the equator and also I would just say like carry your umbrella because the weather gets crazy like it could be super hot and then 20 minutes later it could be like pouring rain so you just like really never know so it's kind of good to just be prepared for that.

So the first area I got to was Ibarra. I got there in October and so it was rainy season and everything was always wet. My shoes were always wet. It took weeks for them to dry. I had to wash my clothes by hand and then I would hang it to dry and luckily there was a covering but there's a lot of moisture in the air and so it took a long time for my clothes to dry. But you might be in the coast or in the jungle as well. I was never there but it's extremely hot and extremely humid. You want to wear thin clothing but also you need to be careful because there's a lot of mosquitoes and they bite you through your clothing. So you just need to find a good balance. Expect to sweat. You know you're on the equator so the sun is really strong. It's really direct but you need some good sunscreen for sure. I'd get sunburned even when it was cold outside because the sun was so strong so look out for that.
