Don't be shy about asking what those Aussie or Kiwi slangs mean, although there are a lot of them. And so, yeah, for the language tip, just be curious and practice them and have fun with it.
Australia is, they speak English but it's a different kind of English. They have their own slang and they have their own way of speaking and so sometimes it's really hard to understand what they're saying. It took me about six months to finally be able to understand what they were saying without having to stop them and ask them to slow down. They speak very fast and so it's okay to have to not be able to understand them at first. It definitely takes time and it's fine to ask them to slow down. They'll understand and they are just some very kind people but they do have a different type of language and so a different type of English and so it is a little bit difficult to get used to at first.
You'll come to learn the Australians really like to shorten all of their words. McDonald's, they turn into Macca's. They'll find any way to make a longer word shorter, and it's a bit of a learning curve when you first get there, but don't be afraid to say, hey, what's this mean? And you'll understand their language pretty soon, hopefully.
The Australian people love it when you try to embrace their culture and like just kind of like be like them in a way so they love it when you use the words that they use like Parking lot there. They don't call it a parking lot. They call it a car park
Something I found out when I went down to Australia to play football was they don't call it football, they call it gridiron. I don't know why, but a couple people, Australians, got mad when I was calling it football. Because apparently football is for pansies, but you know, it was still the same thing. Another sport they really liked was rugby. That's one of my favorites.
So there is a different sort of English in Australia. Some of you may have heard of phrases like Akadai Knight or Fadankum or something like that but it's for those in the states it's really easy to get into but it's good to know the Aussie lingo and the languages that you will find there. It's very multi-cultured, get ready for a lot of other languages to catch up on.
