What were some favorite foods?

  • Fried plantano (fried banana). And their famous rice and beans. (Allison)
  • Arroz con chuleta y tonstonea. (Jake)
  • Rice and beans, tostones, queso de flan. (Jennifer)
  • Rice and beans with fried chicken. Also, Pinchos. (Wes)

What was a funny experience?

  • Way too many to remember one. I enjoyed every second of my mission. (Allison)
  • In my first area, I was telling what I thought was a very spiritual personal experience. When I got done I looked around the room and everyone was looking around at each other. After an awkward pause, we all just shrugged it off because no one in cuffing me had a clue of what I had just said in Spanish. (Jake)
  • My first Christmas was fun. Taking lots of pictures with a sister from church as well as the Elders in our area. (Jennifer)
  • So much diarrhea. (Wes)

What was a crazy experience?

  • My companion and I were “tocando puertas” knocking doors and we went down this one street and nobody seemed to be home but half way down the street their was a crazy barking dog going nuts. We continued down the street and made our rounds back up again and when we were passing that house, somehow the dog got out and I was freaking out but my companion was telling me just walk slow and we will be okay. He was still barking crazy but following us back to our car. So we are trying to walk calmly and slowly back to our car and finally get to our car and hurry and jump in. Once we do that, the dog is going nuts all over the car. (Allison)
  • I was asleep one of my first nights in the mission. Then I heard a gun shot. It sounded really close. When I woke up the next day, we asked our landlord what happened and she told us the guy downstairs had been shot. (Jake)
  • We found a woman who was so incredibly nice to my companion and I. She received a phone call during our visit and told the person on the other extension that she was talking and having a conversation with some Mormon missionaries. The person was talking to her for a moment and then hung up the phone. She looked at us with the ugliest look and started yelling at us and telling us to leave her alone and to never come back. (Jennifer)
  • I was pretty safe the whole time. We saw a drug dealer once I guess. (Wes)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • I remember teaching a lady who had a problem with the tithing commandment. So, we asked her to pray about it and when doing so to pause for a second after she asks Heavenly Father about tithing to wait for an answer. She did and as she paused, I remember the Spirit being so strong that I knew she had her answer. (Allison)
  • Every second of every day for two years. Each time you walked into a house where someone had actually been reading and praying about the Book of Mormon. You could feel the spirit so strong even before you had asked if they had read or not. If people read and pray with an open heart, they always came to know the Book of Mormon is true. It is a guarantee and it is amazing to watch people change so quickly because of it. (Jake)
  • As I was testifying to an investigator couple, the words flowed out easily. Almost as if I was a native speaker. This happened at the beginning of my mission. My first transfer. (Jennifer)

What are some interesting facts about the Puerto Rico San Juan East Mission?

  • When I was called to serve in my mission, it was the San Juan Puerto Rico East Mission and when I left the east, west went back into one mission so it felt like Heavenly Father made the mission just for me and then closed it just as I was leaving. They split the mission to see how it would do and then put it back into one mission. (Allison)
  • We covered the east half of Puerto Rico including Vieques. And also, the British and United States Virgin Islands. We also covered Antigua, St Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, and Barbados. (Jake)
  • Only one of the companionships could drive the vehicle. (Jennifer)
  • Great food. Beautiful land. Amazing culture. Hard to get people to commit. (Wes)

What was the weather like?

  • Rainy, hot and humid. (Allison)
  • Amazing each and every day. I remember thinking I could never have a bad day because all I had to do was look around and see how beautiful the place where I was serving was and it made every pain or difficulty I had go away. (Jake)
  • The people were caring and loving. They treated all as part of their family. It was beautiful scenery. (Jennifer)
  • Hot, humid, sunny. (Wes)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • People were really nice. Even if they weren’t interested in our message, they would serve us cookies/crackers and water or a nice beverage or even food. And then we were on our way. (Allison)
  • Don’t pack anything to keep you warm. Pack clothes that can dry quickly whether they are soaked by sweat or by rain. (Jake)
  • Pack so that a person could have mix and match outfits. No sweaters. More short sleeves, light material. Bring breathable garments. Comfortable shoes are a must. (Jennifer)
  • Food, landscape. (Wes)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Not a long sleeve area. Pack light. And be prepared to be served food. And don’t say no or you’ll offend them. (Allison)
  • A stronger testimony of my Savior, Jesus Christ and the restored gospel that is on the earth for us to enjoy. Everything happy in my life can be associated with my testimony and my mission is where my testimony became my testimony. (Jake)
  • Joy, new friends, new family, a stronger testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel. (Jennifer)
  • Get the thinnest stuff available. (Wes)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • I learned about myself, about the gospel and gained a stronger testimony. (Allison)
  • I learned a language, and i learned that I can teach well. I also learned how to study. (Jake)
  • Speaking my mission language all of the time. (Jennifer)

What are some skills you gained?

  • Not to be shy, to open my mouth and talk to everyone. Trust in someone else and trusting that Heavenly Father has a plan for each and every one of us. (Allison)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • As long as you have a testimony of the restored gospel and build upon it, that is enough to carry you through your mission. (Allison)
  • I wish I knew how rewarding a mission was going to be, and how hard I could work to bring others closer to their Savior. (Jake)
  • I am a convert, so I really wish I could have attended seminary. I wish I could have gained a lot more knowledge than I knew. (Jennifer)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to San Juan East?

  • If you have a companion who is hard to work with and might not get along with, you do your part and love them regardless and serve them to the best of your ability it will work out. (Allison)
  • Just know a mission is the right place to be. Every second you spend there you will cherish. Make the most of the little time you have by giving the Lord your all. Never doubt the message you carry because it is THE most important message ever!! (Jake)
  • Love your companion at all times. Stay with your companion in public, church, church activities, and at all appropriate times. Stay obedient in all things (the missions rules). My mission president’s wife always told us missionaries if we didn’t know what to say to those we were teaching or tracking, to share our testimony or testify of the truthfulness of the gospel. (Jennifer)
  • Chill out, get to know people, love them, and love yourself. Missions are often made harder than they have to be by perfectionism or self-criticism. Be kind to yourself. (Wes)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • I made so many it is hard to say just one. Just know each mistake you make puts you that much closer to perfecting the language. Never be afraid of making a language mistake. An experience I had is I went to Wendy’s my first day. I started trying to order in Spanish and after struggling for a few minutes the guy at the counter said, “dude just tell me in English.” He spoke English like a lot if people do. (Jake)
