What are some interesting facts about the Lima East Mission?

  • Spanish is by far the language spoken, but in the mountains you can hear some Quechua, the more remote, the more Quechua. The terrain covers almost all types. Lima is dry desert at sea level. Cerro de Pasco is at 14,000+ feet. There is also jungle (like Amazon River jungle) in the mission but I never went there. A very common punch is made from purple corn (chicha). They have both alcoholic and KoolAide type that use the same name. Lima is surrounded by the most desolate looking hills I’ve ever seen. Entire hillsides with absolutely no visible vegetation in many parts. Many people there are extremely poor. We worked in neighborhoods where the best house was built out of discarded plywood rather than cardboard and woven bamboo mats. People eat lots of rice in Peru. And soup. Lunches that we ate with members were usually huge. (Paul)
  • We’re the best mission ever. (Chase)

What was the weather like?

  • Hot/humid in Lima during the summer, cool during the winter. Never rains in Lima but there is fine mist in the air for parts of the winter that I loved. In the mountains (Huancayo), it was similar to Salt Lake’s climate, maybe with less snow. Higher up in the Andes (Cerro de Pasco), freezing cold at night. Super hot/wet/humid in the jungle. (Paul)
  • Fue buena… aunque nunca llueve. (Ever)
  • Jungle was hot and humid. Lima was foggy and sometimes cold. (Chase)
  • Adaptable. (Cristopher)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • The people are in general very humble and kind. They are very Catholic, but many are eager to learn about the gospel and accept it. I enjoy different cultures and places so I liked the whole experience, minus some pretty severe homesickness bordering on depression the first couple of months. (Paul)
  • Fue lo máximo… muy bueno. (Ever)
  • They were so humble and ready to hear the gospel. (Chase)
  • Todo. (Cristopher)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • You need to be prepared for everything from jungle heat to freezing cold Andes, so a bit of everything. Thermal garments were in high demand high up in the mountains. (Paul)
  • Wrinkle free shirts so you never have to pick up an iron. (Chase)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • Got to see life from a different perspective. Many spiritual experiences strengthened my testimony. (Paul)
  • I have used Spanish to get a lot of job offers. (Chase)
  • Una nueva familia que se extendio por todo el peru. (Cristopher)

What are some skills you gained?

  • Spanish, ability to be more grateful for my blessings, communicating with a wide variety of people. (Paul)
  • Being personable with people, dedication and hard work. (Chase)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • I wish I never cared about getting a higher position like Zone Leader or office missionary. (Chase)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Lima East?

  • Humble yourself and let the light of Christ shine through you. Be transparent and always be smiling. (Chase)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • Calling someone “pregnant” instead of “embarrassed”. Not funny, but accidentally inappropriate. I mistakenly called a comb (peine) something totally not appropriate (pene). (Paul)
  • Let them make them…it’s funnier that way. (Chase)
