Mexico Xalapa Missionary Survey

Here are survey responses from Mexico Xalapa RMs, to give you a snapshot into what it’s like to live in the mission.

When did you serve?

  • January 2014-July 2015 (Sister)
  • 2013-2015 (Arturo)

What areas did you serve in?

  • Papantla, Xalapa, Poza Rica, and Tuxpan! (Arturo)

What were some favorite foods?

  • Taquitos durados, Tacos al pastor, Pozole, Agua de avena, Ponche de frutas. (Sister)
  • Garnachas, Enchiladas, Tacos!! (Arturo)

What was a funny experience?

  • I have a soft spot for dogs and Mexico has a lot of street dogs. One Sunday as my companion and I were going to visit our investigators before church, we passed by two dogs that I had become friends with. They decided it would be a good day to follow us everywhere we went. And they did. We tried out running them, hiding behind trees, running through alleyways, but they always found us. This went on for about an hour until we finally decided to go to church in a taxi to lose them. (Sister)
  • I had never used a boiler before so the first time I tried using it I burned off my eye lashes! (Arturo)

What was a crazy/dangerous experience?

  • In my first area there was a gun fight that spread to other areas in the city over the course of two days. At one point, all the missionaries were staying in the house of a member in the event of evacuation. Everything settled down quickly and the work resumed not long afterwards. No my mom didn’t hear this story until I got home. (Sister)
  • I was about a year into my mission. I was assigned a new area and on the first day I was spat on by an angry Christian. (Arturo)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • In my last area, an investigator told us a story about her struggles and challenges and how she didn’t make the best choices in life. She actually had an abortion when a teenager. That decision plagued her all her life until she heard the message of the Atonement. However a few times throughout her life, she dreamt about her child, who appeared dressed in white on several occasions. In those dreams her child told her that he was with God and very happy. He said he had forgiven her for what she had done and that she shouldn’t be sad anymore. He also said that she should forgive herself and that God had forgiven her. When she told us this story, the Spirit was so strong. She obviously had a great love for the Savior and felt His acceptance and forgiveness of her despite her actions. (Sister)
  • My first priesthood blessing in the field was to a 77 year old man with Tuberculosis. He was the sweetest guy I had ever known and it killed me that he was going through so much pain. During the blessing I got an instant sign of relief and assurance that all would be well. He passed away a couple weeks later after having received the Aaronic Priesthood. I was able to teach him, baptize him, see him become ordained and was blessed by his love and charity. (Arturo)

What are some interesting facts about the Xalapa Mission?

  • It was split (in 2012ish) from the Veracruz mission. The first American sister missionaries arrived in January 2014. The people are friendly. Most of the mission is in the state of Veracruz but there is one area that is in another state, called Puebla. The two drinks that rule Mexico are Coke and beer. (Sister)
  • It is hot and humid in most the mission, but the Southern part of the mission can get cold! I was there when Xalapa only had one stake with eight wards, now it has two stakes and about 15 wards! The Jalapeño originated from Xalapa! (Arturo)

What was the weather like?

  • Hot, hot, hot and VERY humid. I sweat in places I didn’t even know it was possible to sweat. However, in the winter it rains a lot and gets pretty cold. You need to be prepared for super hot and cold weather (mostly hot). Also you’ll want rubber boots (you can buy those in Mexico, so don’t waste luggage space) when it pours rain because they don’t have water drainage in the streets. It’s like crossing a river when you cross the street. Also a water proof jacket is recommended for the rain. Pick garments that are made of breathable material. Whatever you do, DO NOT being mesh garments, unless you like having them glued to your body. (Sister)
  • Humid and hot! (Arturo)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • They are very hard-working and usually very happy. Most people, it seems, are extroverted and love to have a good time. (Sister)
  • They are the most kind and loving people I have ever met! Even when they don’t want to accept the Gospel at that time they will still invite you in and offer you food and water! (Arturo)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Rubber boots for when it rains. You can buy them in Mexico. Waterproof jacket. Bring lightweight, breathable fabrics, including garments (mesh are the worst!). Ladies, you can buy those things you need every month pretty much anywhere. However I brought my own (a ton of them!) and never had to buy them once during my WHOLE mission. I highly recommend it, because tampons are kind of expensive and people look at you weird when you buy them. (Sister)
  • A really good umbrella! A rain coat and good rain boots! During the summer it rains a lot! (Arturo)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • A stronger testimony of the reality of the Gospel of Christ and just how easy it is to follow His will if only we give a little of ourselves. After the mission the blessings come rolling in as well. I’ve been very blessed because of my service. (Sister)
  • My family has become active in the Church, and my brother who isn’t a member has been receiving the missionaries in his home to teach him and his family! (Arturo)

What are some skills you gained?

  • Better people skills. Better habits, aka praying and scripture study. Life skills, etc. (Sister)
  • Leadership is the biggest one! You are forced out of your shell, and become a much more extroverted person, you become more respectful to those around you, and develop patience as well! (Arturo)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • To not worry about what everyone else thinks or says. Numbers don’t matter. What matters are the people as children of God, not statistics. Also everyone learns at their own pace. If you’re learning a language and someone learns it faster than you then who cares?! You’ll learn the language, I promise. (Sister)
  • Not to worry too much about preparation, no one arrives prepared, you become prepared through time. Come with an open mind, and just remember that if you learn to love the people you will enjoy your mission. A lot of the members in Mexico are extremely blunt- it’s not personal if they offend you, they are simply straight forward- they still love you, and because they love you they feel they are able to talk to you as of you were their own children! (Arturo)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Xalapa?

  • Just do your best, forget your family/girlfriend/boyfriend/self, listen to and obey your president/mission rules no matter what, and make the decision to stay there. I can’t even imagine being a mom someday without the experience of being a missionary first. (Sister)
  • Gain a testimony of The Book of Mormon and the Prophet Joseph Smith! I would say to read Doctrine and Covenants 4, and study it, it will show you the importance of serving. (Arturo)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • Saying fish (pescado) instead of sin (pecado). And don’t use the word “embarazada” to say you’re embarrassed. What it really means is that you’re pregnant. (Sister)
  • You will learn a lot of slang, just be careful with what you repeat- ask first what it means! (Arturo)
