What was a funny experience?

- Me gustaba cuando encontrabamos personas en la calle y les predicabamos. (Paulina)
- Literally every day has funny experiences. Trying to hike up the huge hills in Parral. 45-60 degree angle hills. (Kyran)
What was a crazy experience?
- When we were going to Basaseachic it was nice, but was kind of dangerous because the narcos are there. (Mauricio)
- I was robbed of my wallet. I should’ve just said right off that I was a missionary. I wouldn’t have lost anything with that approach. It was 9:20 pm just after curfew. (Chad)
- Cuando se me hizo una ampolla en el pie. (Paulina)
- A man pulled a knife on my companion and I and he tried to stab us. There was als0 this guy that had the countenance of Cain (huge, strong, dark, deep voice, hair slicked back, and a scar somewhat like the Joker’s). (Kyran)
What was a spiritual experience?
- When I gave the priesthood to a Tarahumara People there, it was really nice. (Mauricio)
- So many people gained testimonies of the Book of Mormon by doing their own active searching! (Chad)
- Cuando vino el Elder Mickelsen. (Paulina)
- My last six weeks, opening an area, we baptized like crazy! (Kyran)
What are some interesting facts about the Chihuahua Mission?
- The weather, also the places- the mágics towns are really interesting. (Mauricio)
- It’s now split in two. Chihuahua gets super hot and icy snowy cold in the same year. It is a desert. It really is full of dogs including stray Chihuahuas. Many emigrants from the south of Mexico are there and cook great. Menudo soup is made of cow stomach. (Chad)
- Quisiera volver a la mision. (Paulina)
- In July 2013, the mission split into the Chihuahua and the Ciudad Juarez missions (while I was in the MTC). So it started out as the smallest mission in Mexico, but two years later, when I was getting ready to leave, the Chihuahua, Mexico Mission was the number 1 mission in Mexico and nationally ranked in the top 3 in the world. So you are literally going there to work and succeed and convert (not just baptize). It is one of the best missions in the world to work with members, they literally walk with you to contact in the street and do visits, they are the best! (Kyran)
What was the weather like?
- The weather between August and November- that is the nice weather. (Mauricio)
- Freezing icy winds in winter. Most dry heat in summer. Occasional rain which pours hard for brief moments. (Chad)
- Me gusto servir mi mision en el verano. (Paulina)
- Super hot during the spring, summer, and fall. Cold (nothing too extreme) during the winter, but keep in mind that you will be walking all day in it, so be prepared. Pretty dry in Chihuahua, Delicias, Camargo, Ojinaga, Saucillo, Aldama, and Jimenez, and more moist in Parral, Cuauhtemoc, and the towns in La Sierra. (Kyran)
Any things you really like about the area/people?
- They give a lot of food, they are nice, they like to serve. (Mauricio)
- Very loving, willing to meet strangers despite intense violence and diverse beliefs. (Chad)
- Servi en la mision en chihuahua y me gustaria volver a servir otra vez,,,como misionera de verano. (Paulina)
- It doesn’t seem like the perfect vacation spot (no beaches), but it does have some of the most devoted members in the world. Not to mention, Chihuahua state is known for it’s Mormon colonies, so you will meet some Mexican Pioneers. (Kyran)
Any packing/clothing advice?
- Bring always a sweater- it’s important even when the weather is hot, because in a period of time it can change. (Mauricio)
- Bring a winter waterproof coat. You can buy random things in the street malls for ties, shirts, pants, light sweaters, scarves, etc… Bring light thermos for winter. (Chad)
- Todo me gusto. (Paulina)
- If you don’t want to get burned by the sun, which you definitely will, wear long sleeves, especially during the summer, although it is a sacrifice. No missionary will go there and not sweat. You will be allowed to buy sombreros in the field, but not caps, cowboy hats, or the big mariachi sombreros. More like an Indiana Jones style hat. (Kyran)
What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?
- I learned English in Chihuahua, that’s a nice blessing. (Mauricio)
- Faith, priesthood power, a strong understanding of Gods protection and love, confidence in myself, great leadership and work skills. (Chad)
- Servi en el año 2008 y fue muy poco el tiempo que servi. (Paulina)
- The blessing to love EVERYONE. (Kyran)
What are some skills you gained?
- Leadership, how to be a leader and serve other people, was the greatest skill. (Mauricio)
- Leadership, public speaking, teaching, following others, obedience, following and recognizing the Spirit. (Chad)
- Cuando ivamos a enseñarles a las familias. (Paulina)
- Depends on how dedicated you are. You can learn a lot. (Kyran)
What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?
- About the weather, maybe I could avoid many things. (Mauricio)
- To bring a light winter coat. (Chad)
- Quisiera volver a servir como misionera de verano. (Paulina)
- It may seem like a primary answer, but teach from the heart. That is the best way for the Spirit to work on people. Teach with questions. First, to find information, second, to analyze, third, to apply. (Kyran)
Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Chihuahua?
- Be strong, prepare very good for a mission is just for people who are strong, was a message from Elder D. Todd Christofferson. (Mauricio)
- Be obedient. Chihuahua is not the place to lose God’s protective mantle, even for a day. Let the investigator convert by the challenges you give rather than through conversation. (Chad)
- The difference between a good and excellent missionary is that one returns with stories, memories, and souvenirs while the other leaves everything in Chihuahua. (Kyran)
What was a funny language mistake?
- One time I said ‘pisto’ talking about money, because in my Country ‘pisto’ means money and in Chihuahua ‘pisto’ means alcohol, so it was funny. (Mauricio)
- Apparently one of the ways you say pig is inappropriate. (Chad)
- Me gusta el idioma español,, y el ingles tambien me gusta. (Paulina)
- I didn’t hear correctly when someone said they were divorced, I thought they said a different word and I kept pushing towards the family, but us missionaries and the people laughed it off for about 5 minutes, then we forgot the tortillas were on the stove and they caught on fire. (Kyran)
