What was a funny experience?
- Going from the rednecks of West Virginia to the ghetto of Baltimore. (Ben)
- We were out tracting one evening on Kent Island. It was getting dark and was drizzling. We had set a goal to knock on every door on a particular street. As we were going along we came to a house that had a large dog lying in front of the steps. It sounded like he was growling. My companion tried to convince me that we should skip the house, but I was determined to reach our goal. I began walking up the walkway with her protesting behind me. As I neared the dog, I realized that he was very old and the sound we had heard was snoring not growling. He woke up and moved out of the way without protest. No one answered the door, but it was nice to reach our goal. (Amanda)
- Probably one was my first Thanksgiving. We were invited to dinner with a recent convert. Sure, there was turkey, but that wasn’t the main course. We were treated to pig’s feet and sauerkraut for Thanksgiving! Definitely one of the most memorable Thanksgivings I have ever had. (Erik)
- We were walking down the street on the way to an appointment and this little seven or eight year old boy comes running past us, laughing, and unraveling an entire roll of lottery tickets that he had lifted from the corner store. It was like something out of a dream. (Daniel)
- When we broke in the Pratt house and stole all 6 Elders bikes. They were distraught for a solid 6 hours. (Chris)
What was a crazy experience?
- I was there during the riots. (Ben)
- One time my companion and I were heading to see a referral from a member. As we were out we saw a group of older teenagers. My companion invited them to hear our message, which they declined. We started to walk away when they came from behind us and began to beat us up. The beating lasted about 30-60 seconds. It was awesome to see how the Lord protected us, even in that instance. It was the only instance of a beating for years in my mission, but it’s a great experience that also helped others to be safe afterwards. (Erik)
- We fearless found a man who later tried to kill his wife and was taken to prison. We got a tee shirt made of the new paper article. We survived Ralph Manna. (Ann)
- Gunshots. (Daniel)
- As I was coming home from contacting one night with my companion I was rounding the corner, slipped on some ice and rolled under a car as it was pulling out of the convenience store. We were on our bikes. We had another one where my bike was stolen right before I went home for my mission. (Jeremy)
- Going to the top floor of the high rise cages. I don’t think they have those projects anymore. But very dangerous. You could get robbed easily and it would be very difficult to get out. (Chris)
What was a spiritual experience?
- Boldly testified on the bus! We then handed out 21 copies of The Book of Mormon. (Ben)
- One night we went to visit a less active member that we had never met. As we walked down the driveway a man came around the corner of the house and demanded to know who we were. We explained that we were LDS missionaries and that we had come to visit someone. He laughed and told us that he had read our “book” and that it was the biggest lie he’d ever read. He said a lot of other things as well. I was trying to remain non-confrontational when I felt the Spirit very strongly tell me to testify of The Book of Mormon as the word of God. As I bore testimony I felt even more strongly the truth of the book. We left shortly afterwards, but that moment has been a great source of strength to me. (Amanda)
- We once had an investigator that was very bright and had many concerns that were difficult to answer. He read The Book of Mormon, had been to church, the Temple Visitor’s Center, everything. My companion had the inspiration to give him a copy of Preach My Gospel. We gave it to him on Friday, and he had read it by Sunday evening. We went over to see him and his family on Monday. He had read the entire manual and all of those concerns he had were resolved. He answered all of the baptismal interview questions perfectly, quoting them before I could read them off. He and his wife agreed to be baptized that night. They are now sealed to each other and their son, and the baby she is now carrying will be born in the covenant. (Erik)
- Praying over a man walking to his apartment complex in the dark, I asked of we should talk to him and the Spirit was the loudest I ever felt. (Ann)
- Weekly Book of Mormon studies with members in our tiny branch. (Daniel)
- The most spiritual experience I had was when we were invited to participate in a solemn assembly in the Washington DC Temple it was a part of the best experience Temple experience I’ve ever had, The very first time I ever fully walked up to somebody and asked if they knew who you were and if we could share our message with him. - Going to the Washington DC Temple with a family one year after I baptized them. (Chris)
What are some interesting facts about the Baltimore Mission?
- It covers four states. Most areas have a car. Best members on the planet! (Ben)
- Jousting is the state sport of Maryland. (Amanda)
- It’s home of the Baltimore Ravens and Orioles. It has the site of a battle in the War of 1812. (Erik)
- You never get to truly see the fruit of your labor. Sometimes you hear conversion stories of people you met after you leave. There is never enough crab. (Ann)
- Edgar Allen Poe, Fort McHenry, Antietam Battlefield. Every area is rich in history. (Daniel)
- Maryland is a Mason-Dixon line border state several different lines of the under the count railroad several battle- field from both Revolution and Civil War lots of American history in the area Isle of the inner city history also what are the best things is the home of Babe Ruth. (Jeremy)
- Opened in July of 1994. Birth place of Edgar Allen Poe and Babe Ruth ( I think). Star Spangled Banner was written in Ft. McHenry. (Chris)
What was the weather like?
- Normal four seasons. But with humidity it amplifies them. Changes a lot too. (Ben)
- Very humid. The winters are very cold. Ice storms are not uncommon. The summers are very hot, but they were easier on me. (Amanda)
- HUMID! It made the hot temperatures stuffy and the cold temperatures cut right through your clothes. It didn’t get inordinately cold or hot, but you always felt it. Spring and fall were the perfect temperature. There were dazzling lightning storms and really awesome fog that would roll in, in the mornings. (Erik)
- My feet froze in the winter….hurt so bad walking on icy roads. I can’t forget how the forests of trees changed colors in the fall. (Ann)
- Hot and humid in the summer. Cold and humid in the winter. I loved the ice storms. (Daniel)
- The weather is really nice. I never really had an issue but you need to learn what to wear and how to dress with the humidity. (Jeremy)

Any things you really like about the area/people?
- Friendly and hospitable. Very pretty scenery. (Ben)
- There are a lot of immigrants/refugees in Maryland. It is fun to learn of many different cultures. (Amanda)
- The people are hard to reach, but when you can find someone that is wholly committed to learning, they will eat up the Gospel. You can find real growth people in any area. The members are INCREDIBLE! They are so honest and are trying to do the best they can to live the Gospel. (Erik)
- They had slight agents. Many friendly people. Big houses!! (Ann)
- People were friendly and had big hearts. (Daniel)
- The people in the Inner City were the most genuine warming and enjoyable people to work with. You must watch how you talk to people as with any mission. (Jeremy)
- The African American culture in inner city Baltimore has a special place in my heart. Very accepting and non-judgmental. Awesome wards out in the country. Maryland is beautiful and natives have a lot of pride in being from there. (Chris)
Any packing/clothing advice?
- It gets cold, and it gets hot. (Ben)
- Bring a wool coat, long johns, sweaters, layers. In the winter you will need them! (Amanda)
- Take a coat! I didn’t the first winter (I left in August) and it was awful. (Erik)
- Don’t take apostate dresses. I’m talking about Levi skirts. That’s all I took out with me and it was WRONG!!! Don’t do IT! BLESS our members for going to the salvation army for proper skirts for me. (Ann)
- Two pair of socks in the winter is the only way I could keep my feet warm. (Daniel)
- You want to be ready to layer, layer, layer in the winter, spring nice sweater or overcoat, summer short sleeve shirts, fall same as spring. (Jeremy)
What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?
- My family is doing better. Better life perspective! (Ben)
- The blessings are many, and I’m still discovering them. One blessing is that I learned I love to teach the Gospel. Almost every calling I’ve had in the church has been as a teacher in Primary, Sunday School, or Relief Society. Another blessing is that I was given a gift to be able to remember names and places. (Amanda)
- I am a music major in college. I was worried I would come home and not be able to play my instrument anymore. I got home, picked up my trombone again and got those skills back immediately. My teacher said it was the fastest he had ever seen someone get back into playing condition. (Erik)
- I was converted. I wasn’t so shy going home. (Ann)
- Knowledge of the truth that God is aware of us—missionaries, members, converts, investigators, and the guy who just slammed the door in your face. (Daniel)
- Serving my mission has helped me to help me to learn how to open up and talk to anybody has allowed me to to read people and there facial and body language how to be patient and humble has taught me the difference between being willing or forced to do something. (Jeremy)
- Developed relationships that will last forever. My mission changed me for good, forever. Chris)
What are some skills you gained?
- Communication, selfless mindset, knowledge about Gospel and the world. (Ben)
- I learned how to communicate with people. I am in college to become a teacher and my mission helped me learn to teach simply and with power. (Erik)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?
- Talk to every single person I saw! (Ben)
- I wish I had realized that success as a missionary is not measured by baptisms. I learned that success comes through obedience to mission rules and God’s commandments. The greatest measure of success is your place before the Lord. (Amanda)
- I wish I understood that a mission isn’t about serving just because it was a commandment, but that it is about loving the people. Missions need to be entirely selfless. Don’t worry about your own interests. God will take care of those. (Erik)
- I wish I was more converted. I wish I didn’t fear people. I wish I understood the book of Mormon deeper. (Ann)
- That it is okay to relax and enjoy the wonderful people you meet. (Daniel)
- How the weather can work with you or against you so quickly. (Jeremy)
- You spend 2 years serving and the rest of your life thinking about it. Serve well. (Chris)
Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Maryland?
- It’s the Lord’s work. Just work hard and be obedient! (Ben)
- Be honest with yourself in where you are currently at. If you don’t currently have a testimony, that’s ok. Begin working on it. Start asking God the important questions. Make sure you are morally clean and be HONEST about it. It is easy to lie to yourself and think it isn’t that bad. Talk to your bishop and get it fixed, otherwise it will haunt you through your whole mission. God won’t be able to use you the way He needs to. (Erik)
- Don’t be afraid to share your feelings about Jesus. He’s a good guy and if you get to know him, you’ll want to share what you know with those who don’t know. Gain your love of Jesus. Share your love of Jesus. (Ann)
- Prepare spiritually, and let the Lord guide you. This is His work and He is laboring as well. (Daniel)
- Be prepared for a cultural shock if you’ve not been out of Utah. However, the Maryland Baltimore Mission is by far the best one… the people, history and the landscape is absolutely amazing. (Jeremy)
What was a funny language mistake?
- I only served six weeks as a Spanish missionary, but I did have one important learning experience. It doesn’t matter if you know how to ask where the restroom is if you can’t understand the directions to get there! (Erik)
- To be more “peciffic ” I think English was too difficult for many of my own companions who were fluent in the language. (Ann)
