  • 2001-2002 (Jackie)
  • 1998-2000 (Clint)

What areas did you serve in?

  • Vidalia, Forsyth, Pine Mountain, Bluffton/Hilton Head, Douglas. (Catherine)
  • Hilton Head, McRae, Barnwell, Augusta, Savannah, Cordele. (Toni)

What were some favorite foods?

  • Grits, greens, lima beans. (Catherine)
  • Orange brownies, grits, fried chicken, pork chops, greens. (Toni)
  • Grits, collard greens, any cured pork product, rice cooked w/ fat back, hot boiled peanuts, pecan pralines,  okra & stewed tomatoes w/ a little pat of butter on top, sweet potato pie (it’s not the same as pumpkin pie), peach cobbler, Vidalia onions, bell peppers taste sweeter here. (Cylena)
  • BBQ Pork Chops, Cheesy Grits. (Travis)
  • Low Country Boil, Mac n Cheese. (Jackie)
  • Anything smoked and sweet potato crunch. (Clint)

What was a funny experience?

  • Texting the zone leaders that you are going to be late and them texting back with a sarcastic response. (Catherine)
  • Teaching Brother Mcrae… Always funny … (Toni)
  • You will never love the mail man so much as you do while you are a missionary! We would sometimes even schedule our days around when the mail man was supposed to be delivering our mail LOL! (letter carrier, if I’m being P.C. LOL!) (Cylena)
  • Riding bikes through a flooded street. (Travis)
  • Every maintenance man was named Bubba, and they all looked like a Bubba. (Jackie)
  • We had a turtle as a pet for a few days. (Clint)

What was a crazy experience?

  • Meeting a drunk guy at night! (Catherine)
  • We were threatened with a gun while tracting. (Toni)
  • Giant cockroaches live in the trees in this part of the world & when it rains (like all the time) they crawl in under the doors or something & come to dry out in your house – people here call them palmetto bugs (I don’t know how to spell it) but make no mistake – they are GIANT COCKROACHES!!! (Cylena)
  • Being thought of as cops by a drunk man who thought we were accusing him of break ins in the neighborhood. He pulled a gun out as we were walking away. (Travis)
  • Someone broke our window and threw a baby rattlesnake in our apartment. Trying to call Bubba for help while standing on the furniture was a challenge. (Jackie)
  • We saw a cross burning and my flash went off when trying to take a picture of it. We got out as quickly as possible. (Clint)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • An investigator bearing a powerful testimony. (Catherine)
  • It’s difficult to put them into words My mom got mad @ me while I was there because I kept sending her home pictures of me & my companion goofing off, but you can’t really whip out your camera when you’re having as serious moment or when someone is feeling the spirit One thing that was interesting to me was that going to church on Sunday (or even the whole day for that matter) didn’t feel like a time to recharge my spiritual batteries (like it had in my life before I was a missionary). On Sundays we were focused on thinking about who we had invited to come to church, & who needed a ride or something like that, then who actually made it there & if they were having a positive experience & then trying to plan how & when we would have follow up meetings w/ people to talk about how they felt when they came to church … etc so instead of Sunday feeling like a day of rest, I usually felt more worn out than rested – it totally felt like a work day [maybe even a work overtime day]. (Cylena)
  • Asking converts to be baptized during the first lesson, and having them accept. (Travis)
  • Way too many. My companion and I white washed an Elders area and went into separate rooms to pray who we should teach and set a baptism date. We had not met anyone yet. We both came back with same name and date. Of course, it happened. (Jackie)
  • I remember the first Spanish branch meeting we had. I didn’t understand 90% of the meeting, but I’ve never had a more spiritual sacrament experience. (Clint)

What are some interesting facts about the Macon Mission?

  • http://www.gastateparks.org/reservations, https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.472790846142849&type=1, http://www.deseretnews.com/faith/lds-church-news, http://www.deseretnews.com/article/765623191/LDS-Church-announces-creation-of-58-new-missions.html?pg=all, https://www.facebook.com/groups/263083500370008/1091934204151596/?notif_t=group_activity https://www.facebook.com/groups/121500014605269/. (Cylena)
  • 40+ baptisms a year, about 40+ vehicles, lots of biking and rural areas, only the assistants to the president had cell phones. (Travis)
  • We taught more African American’s than others. (Jackie)
  • There are wonderful stories about the civil war throughout the mission. (Clint)

What was the weather like?

  • HUMID!!! (Catherine)
  • It’s humid in Georgia! In the summer you don’t know if you’re sweating, or if you are all wet from the humidity (except for when you’re getting rained on). In the winter the humidity freezes car doors shut – it even gets into the locks & freezes them shut. It rains a lot & you have to either drive 5 miles, or wait 5 minutes for it to stop. The rain is really hard & heavy – like the ocean falling from the sky all @ once. (Cylena)
  • Weather was a constant…rain, humidity, good weather, and tornado warnings in the same day. (Travis)
  • Hot and humid, humid and hot. (Jackie)
  • Hot, humid, and rainy. (Clint)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • I loved the help people gave us and how easy places were to find! (Catherine)
  • Once you get to know people they love you because they know you care… (Toni)
  • The people show their love by feeding you (I like food) I love & miss the people I met – I wish I could see them again there was so much green! I’m from a desert, so I had never seen so much green – People park their cars on the grass here & it doesn’t kill it! LOL! (Cylena)
  • Very hospitable. Would offer water even though they had no intention of hearing the message. (Travis)
  • It was the hardest place with weather and poverty, but EVERYTHING about this mission was “awesome”! (Jackie)
  • They are down to earth and always willing to talk religion. (Clint)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Bring clothes that you wont ruin when you gain weight, because you probably will! LOL! Bring clothes that you can wear in layers, because you could take some off in the summer months & put more on in the winter months Bring an extra pair of comfy shoes because if you wear the same ones every day, they will start to hurt your feet & when it rains they will need time to dry out. (Cylena)
  • I’m from Idaho, so I took a heavy coat and sent it home within the first few months. Fabrics designed for moisture wicking and lightweight were the best. (Travis)
  • No make up it will melt off, no perfume it attracts bugs, no lotions it melts and attracts bugs. Comfortable shoes. (Jackie)
  • Skin so soft and gold bond powder. (Clint)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • I received blessings of comfort and counsel and also healing blessings. (Catherine)
  • So many, but it’s difficult to put them into words. (Cylena)
  • Too many. Close companionship if Holy Ghost. Best friend with Joseph Smith, best and worst companions, great love for the people, greater knowledge, faith, patience, thankfulness. My mission president and his wife are still great friends and family to me. The examples of the Elders. (Jackie)
  • I learned how to magnify my priesthood and how to listen to the spirit. (Clint)

What are some skills you gained?

  • To be able to talk to people. (Catherine)
  • Planning… Scheduling… Praying. (Toni)
  • How to be annoyed, but not freak out – mostly while I was having to learn how to co-exist w/ companions that were very different than me – people that I would never have chosen to live with in my normal life – IT CAN BE DONE! LOL! Famous quote from Sister Jacobsen (my mission president’s wife) “You can do hard things!” (& I did! 🙂 (Cylena)
  • Delegation, compromise, patience. (Jackie)
  • I learned how to deal with difficult people and overcome my fears. (Clint)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • To just go to work and not worry about other things. (Catherine)
  • All of what I knew at the end… (Toni)
  • How much it was gonna hurt my heart to leave the people I met. (Cylena)
  • What I didn’t know I learned. I would have gone sooner if I knew what a life changing blessing it would be for me and my family. (Jackie)
  • Dump Penny (girlfriend) sooner. (Clint)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Macon?

  • Have fun…love the people…show them you sincerely care about them…it’s never about numbers. (Toni)
  • I took the opportunity to read the Bible from cover to cover while I was there – I figured it was appropriate since I was in the Bible Belt – but I learned that not everybody reads from the same Bible, & not everybody reads any Bible, some people just trust what their clergy person tells them is in the Bible & I bet some just make stuff up to try to win an argument Some people are very anti-Mormon in this part of the world – when you come across them, just try your best to listen to the Holy Ghost – if you feel like it’s time to leave a situation, just bear a short testimony & get outta the situation – there are people who take classes on how to tear down Mormon belief systems, so don’t let them get you into a battle of wits or like a Bible-bashing type of situation. (Cylena)
  • Repent. Participate in seminary. Memorize Scripture mastery. Pray and fast regularly. Get ready for a wild ride! Forgive anyone who needs it. Don’t hold yourself back with sin or resentment. (Jackie)
  • Just do it, and prepare. (Clint)

What was a funny language mistake?

  • They talk funny here! LOL! My friend made up dictionary of southern terms that were new to us & every time I look @ it, I laugh! Once I had the gift of tongues because I was the only person in the room who could understand what this guy was saying! (a senior couple missionaries, & 2 other missionaries trying to communicate w/ a very southern sounding person) I seriously was praying every second to be able to understand this person & really concentrating on the words that were coming out of his mouth. There was this one time when I really shocked my companion w/ my understanding of the language LOL! – we were sitting out on the porch of a lady who was a member of the ward. (I think we were waiting for her to come out because we were going to get a ride home w/ her or something like that. She was going to go to her mother’s house after she dropped us off) – while we were waiting there on the porch, a teenage girl walked up & saw us & asked where the lady was. I answered her in the best southern slang you ever heard w/o even missing a beat (she fittin ta go er mama hou – translation – she is getting ready to go to her mother’s house) LOL! My companion burst out into laughter after the girl left because she couldn’t believe how I answered her like I had been living there all my life LOL! (Cylena)
  • “All y’all” instead of “y’all”. (Jackie)
