When did you serve?

What areas did you serve in?

  • DRC, RC, Burundi, Cameroun, South Africa, Kinshasa, Pointe Noire, Lubumbashi, Many others. (Howard)

What were some favorite foods?

  • Mangoes, lamb. (Howard)

What was a funny experience?

What was a crazy experience?

  • Driving and being accosted by the police. Several automobile accidents. (Howard)

What was a spiritual experience?

  • Working with the Saints who are very devoted and enthusiastic about the gospel. Watching how the gospel spreads almost without effort by the missionaries. Feeling the deep and sincere love of the people and for the people of Africa. Once in passing at the airport in Nairobi we met a young man on the way to the Emirates. When he found out who we were he said he had been absent from The Church for a long time, had no literature, and didn’t know where to find The Church in the Emirates where he worked far from his family in Kenya. We encouraged him to search out The Church, gave him our only copy of the Liahona in English, and later found where The Church was in the Emirates and emailed him the location. He subsequently returned to The Church, returned to Kenya and now we keep in touch through Facebook as he and his wife and child rejoice together in The Church. (Howard)

What are some interesting facts about the Kinshasa Mission?

  • It is growing fast. Has been divided twice, and two new Stakes in Kinshasa. A temple is under construction in Kinshasa, Most missionaries are native Africans, or from Madagascar. We served as Public Affairs missionaries and traveled to Burundi, Cameroun, both Congos, and the two existing missions in the DRC at the time, and to South Africa for training. While daily life in the countries we visited was difficult at times, the work is inspiring. People often stopped us when they saw our badges and asked for a blessing, or questioned us about Christ and The Church. They are very concerned about things spiritual. (Howard)

What was the weather like?

  • The weather is either dry for half the year or wet half the year. It is warm to hot during the middle of the days, cool in the mornings during the dry season, hot all the time during the rainy season. (Howard)

Any things you really like about the area/people?

  • The country is beautiful, and the people welcoming and friendly. We loved both. (Howard)

Any packing/clothing advice?

  • Good shoes, waterproof, light tropical wear. (Howard)

What blessings did you receive from serving a mission?

  • Too many to list. The family was safeguarded. We made eternal friends. We lost any remaining materialistic desires. (Howard)

What are some skills you gained?

  • Travel skills.. How to dodge insane drivers. How to understand African French, sort of. (Howard)

What do you wish you knew/did at the beginning of your mission?

  • Had more public affairs awareness and less fear of air travel in-country, and more awareness of exactly how to proceed in Public Affairs. (Howard)

Any advice/testimony for pre-missionaries going to Kinshasa?

  • Don’t fear disease, social unrest, anything about Africa. It is a different place from the West, but the experience is worth every minute. You will miss out on a life-changing experience if you skip Africa. (Howard)
