What I wish I knew - YouTuber Video Transcripts

If I could do it over again, what I wish I would have known going into it the first time, I wish I hadn't poured myself so fully into YouTube as like a main career facet of my life, or even just as big of a part of my life. I'm glad that I did it nearly every day, because I think that's a really good way to see quick growth, but I wish I hadn't done so much editing at first, particularly when we had a lower viewership and fewer followers and weren't making as much money, weren't making enough to justify that time. Although that was helpful in growing our viewers, but it led to burnout real quick and sort of lost ourselves. I wish we would have just thought of ourselves as us and used YouTube as more of a side gig.

What I wish I knew getting started was just to want to use YouTube to make the world a better place through the talents that I have or sharing the talents of other people. I think we live in a society where, I mean, it's the you and YouTube, right? You want the light shining on you, but the light should be shining on you so that you can help other people. Don't make it about you, make it about them, be a them-tuber, and I think that'll lead to greater success and to greater fulfillment.

I wish I knew that you don't have to be perfect to get started, and that people will accept you whether it's a absolutely perfect video or not. And in fact, I wish I knew that the more authentic, the more you are yourself, the more you are imperfect, people actually love that. And they will love you for who you are. It's so incredible. I thought I had to be perfect. I thought I had to be Instagram, you know, versus reality. And I think the reality is that sometimes you are both and that is okay.

I wish I knew was how to edit better and not spend a lot of money on editing software. That's what I wish I knew. I'm still struggling with editing, so if any of you guys have any recommendations, definitely. Also, I wish I knew about lighting. Editing and lighting, I think those two are the biggest things.

I wish the first video that I filmed that I did not buy a minus track from iTunes and use that, because now I have to share not only with the composition but the audio track itself with a third party. The best thing to do is either use MIDI, use royalty-free music if you can, or create the instrumentals yourself because that'll make a huge difference. The other thing is MCNs, multi-channel networks, are usually not a good thing for most people. I feel like they didn't benefit us when we were signed with an MCN network that much.

What I wish I knew when we first started. I wish I knew how big YouTube was going to be. And I wish I'd made it more serious. Like I wish I'd put more care and time into learning it sooner. Because man, YouTube's gotten crazy. It's grown so big. It's so awesome. And I wish I had just taken it more seriously sooner. And I think I can even take that advice today. Because there's definitely moments where I don't put enough care into it. And I think that's sound advice, you know. The best time to plant a tree, you know, is 30 years ago or whatever. The second best time is right now. So I take my own advice and say take this seriously. Treat it with respect and work hard. Because it's gonna get bigger.

I wish I knew early on about recon and research. I wasted a lot of years of making videos, and I'm talking multiple years, where I was just filming something that I was going to do anyway, and I do home improvement and DIY, so I was like, I have to fix the dishwasher, I'm just going to make a video about fixing the dishwasher. That's okay, but actually go onto YouTube, open up what's called a dummy account, just use a new Gmail, and then start doing some really quick searches at first, and then don't search anymore. Let YouTube feed you what it is it wants to feed you. You'll see what it suggests, and take a look at that and start creating lists of ideas based on what YouTube is giving you. The more you use that information, the more you can find out what YouTube is going to suggest of your content to other people. So let YouTube tell you what it is that you should be creating for your viewers, and you're going to be a lot more successful a lot faster.
