Common misconceptions - YouTuber Video Transcripts

A real world common misconception with YouTube, my daughter has a channel, it was very successful and people she would know who were they consider themselves YouTubers were like hey let's do a video together let's collab let's collab that'd be super cool and you have to realize that when you're creating videos you have to have someone in mind who is your demographic. My daughter has a channel where they're playing piano and she may have a hundred thousand subscribers but if you have a video game channel where you're gaming the people from my daughter's demographic aren't going to want to follow your gaming channel and so just a misconception is that you know any audience is a good audience no you want to focus on somebody you have a target audience you create content for them because if you don't create content that they'll want to watch no one's going to watch your videos.

The common misconceptions about YouTube is how quick your numbers can rise. It takes a really long time and a lot of hard work for you to get to those really huge numbers and for you to start seeing the impact you're creating. Yeah, that's it. Just wait for the numbers to come, provide good content and don't be conceived by anyone telling you they can give you likes or they can give you subscribers. Just don't don't fall for that. Rogue and kill.

So speaking about the common misconceptions, I would say it takes a lot more time than you think that it will. You see the finished product, it's almost like false advertising, right? You see all of the fun, all of the great end product, but what you don't see is the work behind it. So just keep that in mind when you're creating. Also, you might never go viral, and that's okay. It doesn't mean that you're not being a success. I would say that if you value each person as a person and not a number, you're going to see more success because those are the people who are lifting you up and carrying you through this journey of being a YouTuber. I would also say it's not impossible to make a lot of money with a niche audience. So a very small audience, you don't have to have a huge following to be successful.

I don't really know how common it is, but I think there is a misconception out there that it can be an overnight success on YouTube, which I guess it can happen, kind of like winning the lottery, but your plan should not be based on that. It should just be based on sticking to it. Do it every day, or almost every day at least. I don't do it on Sundays at all, but try it for a and work really hard at it, and you'll eventually get in the habit of doing it, and you'll get used to seeing yourself and hearing your voice sounding weird to yourself on camera. Anyway, it's just a lot of work and a lot of things to get used to, so overnight success, as I say, takes a lot of time and effort for a long time.

Two common misconceptions I see all the time, or hear all the time, are number one, that you can't make money off of YouTube. Like, you can't make a living. So, when I quit my full-time job as a software engineer, as an engineering manager, my boss, for example, was like, are you serious? That's your job? Like, you're going to do that for a living? So, you can make a great living. You can make way more than you can make at a traditional job, and there's no limit. That's the best part. We made 300% more than we made in 2021 in 2022, for example. So, there's no limit on that. Another misconception is that it's easy. A lot of people are like, oh, that guy's got a... I don't do gaming. I do home improvement and DIY, but a lot of friends that I have are running gaming channels. A lot of people say, oh, what a lazy guy. He's sitting around doing gaming videos and playing video games for a living, and in reality, they're putting like 18-hour days in. So, it's prepare to work a lot, but prepare to have the potential to make tons of money as well.

I've worked with a lot of creators that are coming through, up and coming, or trying to get into it, and the first thing they do is they go out and they try to look professional right out of the gate in terms of like they would be another business. They get a logo and they pay for someone to create a logo and they get this name and they research this name and although a name is very important, it's not the most important thing. The content is the most important piece. So the misconception is is that you have to be completely prepared to get started and that's actually not true. In fact, it's the opposite. Getting started is much easier than being fully prepared. The next misconception I would say for me is being successful immediately out of the gate. That's something that's not going to happen, maybe for some, but usually it's going to take a lot more work and effort than than to start and be an overnight success.

I think a couple common misconceptions about being a YouTuber is that YouTube is overly saturated and while there is a ton of content and there are certain topics that are kind of seem saturated, that does not mean that there's not opportunity. You know, YouTube likes to serve up fresh content and so even if there's a thousand videos about Romania, for example, you can publish a video about Romania and still get lots of views, even in 2021 or 2030 or whatever year it is. Also, there are so many people who make a living off of YouTube. I have a kind of medium-sized YouTube channel that, you know, maybe makes me thirty to sixty thousand dollars a year, but there are like tens of thousands of channels that are bigger than our channel on YouTube, maybe a hundred thousand more channels probably.

Common misconceptions is interesting because I hear a lot of people that are really afraid that it's going to be super, super hard. And to those people, I would say it's actually easier than you think to get started. And then there's other people that think it's super easy and they see YouTubers and they're like, oh, that's so easy. I could do that. I could just film videos, goofing off and make millions of dollars. And to them, I would say it's harder than you think. Uh, the reality is it's a ton of work. It's actually a very serious, um, takes a lot of serious effort and planning and preparation and studying and learning. But at the same time, I truly believe that anybody who's passionate and excited about it can see success and it's not going to take you forever. So it is possible. You can do it. Um, and there's plenty of room for more people on YouTube.
