Extreme weather - Taiwan Video Transcripts

So I was serving in a little town just north of Jiayi called Huwei and there was supposed to be a typhoon that day but we woke up and the sun was shining and the streets were all clean and everything and so we get out and we get going and this typhoon had rolled in and like the windows were shaking and everything was nuts and we ended up deciding to ride back in this typhoon before it got too bad but that was just a mistake because an hour ride turned into like a two and a hour adventure and the wind was so bad going through the rice paddies that I had to get down on my chest like with my face down in the ground holding my bike from flying away and so I mean just make smart decisions when you're out and the typhoons are rolling in.

Taiwan has some pretty awesome weather. The typhoons are the coolest part. The typhoons are winds that get up to insane miles per hour. I'm not going to go with the number because I don't know how fast they are. But they're just heavy rain and strong winds. We had a couple of ones that were bad enough to the point where we had to stay inside our apartment for the entire day because we couldn't move. And sometimes, in fact these were really fun times, when you were outside and the typhoon hit, we'd be riding our bikes and you'd just feel like you were riding in a wind tunnel. You could not move. We were pedaling, but we weren't moving. It was very funny. Floods on the streets, floods everywhere, and you'll get used to it. At least it feels like a warm shower.

Taiwan has beautiful weather. It's very humid there. Some crazy weather that I've seen is the craziest, like the heaviest amount of rain that I've seen is in Taiwan. They also have seasonal typhoons there that are pretty intense with heavy winds and rain that knock trees over and do a lot of damage, which is kind of dangerous. But it's also really fascinating to see just how crazy it can get there. And again, it just comes out of the rain. It's very humid, very hot in the summer. Uh, and heavy rain when, when the rain comes.

It rains a ton and it's so hot. I did not think it was possible to sweat so much in my whole life. You'd walk out the door at 10am and you'd be sweating by 10.01. Typhoons, those were common. But other than that, yeah, just get ready for heat. Summers are really hot. Winters, if you're in an area that is humid cold, then it's just cold. And then after, especially after your body gets accustomed to the heat, 60 degrees or like low 70s feels like Antarctica. So the weather, it's beautiful though once you learn to love it. I think something I often found myself was complaining about the weather, but just love it. Just recognize that sweat is normal.

The craziest weather I've ever been in was in Taiwan. We were outside and we had just gone grocery shopping and before we knew it a typhoon had entered the island and it started blowing wind like crazy. I was pushing against my bike, we weren't riding it because it's too dangerous, but I was pushing against my bike to move it forward with all of my might and a headwind would not let me move. No matter how hard I pushed, no matter how much strength I exerted, the wind would not let me move. So if you go to Taiwan, you're going to have some crazy experiences with typhoons. So good luck.

When I went to Taiwan, I was not expecting it to be so humid. It's way different when things are as humid as it is in Taiwan. When it's hot, it's really hot. And then when it's cold, the one thing I didn't expect was in the winter, the humid actually makes it really cold. You know, the wind will go straight through your jacket, right to your bones. It's freezing. So, and especially because you get used to the hot weather during the summer, and then when it gets cold, you know, December, January, it does get pretty cold. So I would, you know, pack some sweaters, even a good coat. It does rain a lot. So like a rain jacket, I use my rain jacket all the time, all the time. And then there are some typhoons occasionally here in Taiwan, or there in Taiwan. So we were in doors for a few days for a typhoon once.

So Taiwan has a lot of rain. It has a rainy season, but it also has a typhoon season. It's super fun. It's not dangerous. Well, for the most part, it's not dangerous. There's a couple that are really bad, but there's lots of rain. It's super windy and everybody in Taiwan is just freaking out because there's a typhoon coming. But it's a super, super fun experience for anyone that has never experienced a typhoon or a hurricane or any big weather storm like that.

The weather in Taiwan is unpredictable. I would always have an umbrella in your backpack, your box on your bike, or anything because it'll just spontaneously dump. And if you're out riding where there's no shelter, 7-11 you can go into, you're basically toast. So always have an umbrella or poncho. Yeah, ponchos don't really work. Always have an umbrella.

The weather is definitely insane. I remember one time I was in the city and we were biking, normal, nothing, no cloud in the sky, and then all of a sudden it just downpoured and it's night time and I had glasses that I had to wear and I could not see a thing and we're driving, riding our bikes in like two, three inches of water and the streets are flooded and the cars and the scooters are all just going like so slow and we just went into a 7-eleven and just sat there and waited out the storm a little bit but it's so fun.

Taiwan's weather is a little hard to get used to, at least for me being from Utah. It's really wet and really humid and hot there. You gotta watch out for typhoons. Those come usually in the summertime. There was maybe one or two days where I had to stay inside my apartment and basically like a hurricane, just lots of wind, lots of rain, things being blown over, not safe to go outside, and it does rain a lot.

I think the main thing I have to say about the weather in Taiwan is that it's very humid. The word I most often use to describe the weather is 湿湿的, which just means very, very wet. In the summer, it's very hot and sticky, and if it's not raining. In the winter, it's very quite, it can get quite cold, and the humidity makes that cold bite a little bit more. But if you just, if you prepare yourself, just light in the summer, warm in the winter, you'll be good.
