There's like three main religious groups there. There's the Hindus, there's Muslims, and there's Christians. But they all have very, very strong beliefs, I would say. They're very accepting of one another, but they like their religion as well. And just learning what people believe in, what they like to do, just helped you a lot to get accustomed to them. I think what's most important is to observe and listen and just see how the people are before making judgments and things like that, and find ways that you can put yourself in that culture.

The culture in Suriname is very interesting. I would say that everyone is very accepting and opening of one another. However, something that was kind of hard for me was, they kind of tell everyone that they're fat, which in America can be taken very harshly. However, they don't mean it how we take it. They mean it like, oh, they're really happy that we like their food. Another thing is that they have a lot of different religions. There's Muslim, Hindu, and Christians. And so they like their beliefs, but they are also very accepting of other people. So really just embrace the culture. Another kind of cool thing about the culture is that like here, we like knock on doors. And instead, you yell into houses and you say, klop klop, which means knock knock.
