To hear God, we have to look for Him and look for Him in our lives. We have to keep the commandments and do all the things that He asked us to do. Just as we noticed in Nephi that they heard a voice when they were in the temple after the signs of the death of Jesus Christ. And the first time they didn't understand. And the second time they heard a voice, but they didn't understand. And the third time they heard a voice and looked to heaven, where it came from, and they could see Jesus Christ descending.
